Good as Ever
Typical Follett. Linear, simple, somewhat plodding narrative. Largely one dimensional characters. Meticulously researched as usual and the grand historical sweep is peppered with fascinating detail of the everyday dress, food, travel, worship, work, political, legal, social, sexual and class mores of the period. Thoroughly enjoyable as always.

Lagging the others a little
It's a pleasant enough read, but, in truth, this is not quite up to the standard of the earlier Kingsbridge books. This might be because it is more of a "modern" novel where political issues are closer to those of our own time; the author's sympathy with the common man against the powerful and the rich seems more intrusive when issues focus on trade unionism than, say, around church politics. But this novel also lacked the exuberance and the fuller development of the earlier books. The characters seem less well-drawn and the story-line not quite so sharp. There is no-one quite of the stature of Jack or Caris or Edgar or Aliena to encourage a full emotional involvement this time round.

a good historical yarn, but he’s just turning the handle
As usual, Ken Follett’s writing is engaging and simple to follow. The historical context is illuminated well and the characters are, miraculously, right at the centre of world changing events once again. However, this one feels very rote. It lacks a spark and I didn’t enjoy it as much as usual. Very expensive too. He knows how to make the most out of his readership!

Usual high standard
Good view of period in history. Brings times to life.

Another great Follett read!
Ken Follett's books bring history to life and are always captivating. One of my favorite authors.

Fascinating!
Although over 700 pages this reads so well you do not mind; you don’t want it to end. There is no clear protagonist, but rather a look at life/religion/ politics in a small English village in the 18th century. The characters are well defined and by the end of the book, you feel like you know them all. Follett is a genius of including relevant historical information without is slowing down the plot. Fascinating look at early Methodism.
