A meditation on shadows
When Peter Hennessy pops up on the TV and radio what he has to say is never less than interesting. As the historian of the British state and civil service he tends to view politicians 'from behind', as it were, whereas political journalists tend to see them 'front on'. Thus Hennessy has carved a career for himself in an area at which he is arguably top of the heap; certainly of the highest profile.I have a couple of his other books and found them a most satisfying read perhaps because they are straightforward history books. 'Distilling The Frenzy' is not so straightforward. The publishers product description (see above) ''This is the story of Britain's century through the eyes of it's most celebrated chronicler. A major work of our time.'' is quite a puff piece. Hennessey can share the bench with the best of the historians of 20th century Britain that's for sure but I'm not so sure though that it really is a 'major work of our time'. It's more of a meditation upon themes that Hennessy has engaged in professionally and been preoccupied by personally over a lifetime; Britain's place in the world, nuclear deterrence, the secretive state and constitutional reform. That these two orbits of thought must necessarily overlap is a looming presence in this book.On occasion the prose almost trips over itself with, '..as Joe Bloggs once put it.., or '..in the immortal words of Lord Bloggs..' and '..we should never forget General Bloggs' dictum that..' and the extended lists that read like bullet points for meeting of civil servants (because that's probably what they are) do slow things down a tad. overall, though, his style is ,arguably, slighty breezier than his other books which makes me wonder why it still didn't feel as personal as I expected it to be. That said, Peter Hennessy continues to inform, educate and, if it can be said of the writing about such serious subjects, entertain.

Frenzy
Well written but rather self indulgent review of some aspects of the last 60 or so years. Useful background for readers interested in second half 20 century British experiences

Distilling the Frenzy by Peter Hennessy
The book was packaged well and promptly delivered. Professor Hennessy's book is wonderful - clear, fun, informative and extremely interesting. I will be attempting to read everything he has had published.

A marvellous insight into how our country works
Peter Hennessy with his years of experience writes clearly, intelligently and passionately about the subtleties of our political system. A must read for any student of constitutional and political history.
