One of country music's most eclectic heroes, Marty Robbins celebrated an extraordinary career as one of the genre's leading crossover artists. Spending more than 30 years in the music business, Robbins routinely refused to conform to contemporary trends, branching out into pop, rockabilly, Hawaiian, calypso and gospel music, all underlined by his trademark Southern twang. In addition to being a skilled player and performer, Robbins was also a magnificent songwriter, penning many of his best-known hits. He also undertook numerous ventures outside of music during his lifetime, appearing in films and even occasionally participating in NASCAR races. However, it is his music for which he is most fondly remembered, and Robbins retains his reputation as one of the finest ever country musicians and performers.

I grew up listening to the songs of Marty Robbins and his music. I have several vinyl albums by Marty, but Love the Quality of the CD's. At 60+ years of age, I have seen and heard a LOT!!!. Well worth the price. My LP album collection has some scratches, {Kids playing the album}. Now I can hear the sounds and enjoy. Music, no matter what the year, type or sound is precious. Enjoy ALL types of music while you can. COLLECT ALL THAT YOU CAN. YOUR HEIRS CAN ENJOY IT.

Lots of GUNFIGHTER bang for the buck... and more!
I first got acquainted with Marty Robbins when Dad brought home his best-selling album, "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs," in 1960 or thereabouts. (Marty's timing was good... he released it after Elvis had peaked, and before the "British Invasion," and it made it to #6 on the (all-genre) bestseller chart.) I was taken with the bright-red album cover, Marty dressed in black and pulling his six-shooter in a very businesslike fashion. The songs also excited the imagination of a six-year-old boy: "Big Iron," "The Strawberry Roan," and the immortal "El Paso." It was also my introduction to "country music."Those songs are all contained in this impressive collection, along with the songs in the sequel aptly titled "More Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs." More casual and younger listeners might not be aware that Marty Robbins had a fairly significant career before he hit gold with his western tunes, and in multiple genres, including more traditional country music, "teenage pop" music, even Hawaiian music (which he had become familiar with while serving in the Navy during World War II).It's all contained in this collection. Probably half of the songs are Marty originals; half are covers. Marty's rich tenor voice combines with quality musicianship; the recording quality is also just fine to this listener's jaded ears. (Other reviewers have commented on the low transfer quality on some tracks; I must've missed that, because it sounds pretty good to me... for music recorded 60+ years ago.) 319 minutes of total music... not too shabby, for a budget-priced set!The tracks are arranged as follows:Disc 1Tracks 1-31 - Singles 1952-1956Disc 2Tracks 1-3 - Singles 1956Tracks 4-9 - "Rock'n Roll'n Robbins" (1956)Tracks 10-21 - "The Song of Robbins" (1957)Tracks 22-33 - "Song of the Islands" (1957)Disc 3Tracks 1-8 - Singles 1957-1958Tracks 9-20 - "Marty Robbins" (1958)Tracks 21-31 - "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" (1959)Disc 4Tracks 1-15 - Singles 1959-1960Tracks 16-26 - "More Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" (1960)

The great MartyRobbins.
I remember first hearing Marty Robbins back in the '50s - "A white sport coat & a pink carnation" - now, when ever I hear that song, it takes me back to a much better time. I also enjoy hearing him sing Hank William's songs - Lovesick blues, I'm so lonesome i could cry, & Kaw-Liga. The gunfighter ballads - "El Paso" - . There's Hawaiian music & so much more. It's all here, wrapped up in a 4-disc super set. I got mine, you should get your's. Bill M

Ok
If you are looking for the music to be as the photo shows - on the separate disks- don't purchase this one. The songs are all on the disk, but not in any order... they are all mixed up.

Good Collection
This collection is comprehensive and the music is great, but I would've liked something with more distinction between the albums contained in it. Even so, it's a nice selection and a bargain.

All my favorites - if you like country you will love it.
Hours of entertainment! Just came today and I haven't had time to listen to all the cd's yet. Sealed with no scratches on any cd. However most of the little plastic hooks around the center that hold the cd were broken off.I took out all the cd's so I could shake out the loose plastic before it could damage any cd.

The Greatest Country singer ever, bar none.
Marty Robbins was at the height of his singing and songwriting abilities when he cut these albums and singles in the early 60's. Unfortunately for him his record label Columbia/CBS failed Marty badly in that not only did they let stablemate Guy Mitchell grab the glory with covers of 'Singing The Blues' and 'Knee Deep In The Blues', but were too slow in promoting him in the U.K. Marty would have been a household name over here if they'd got their fingers out, but Marty lost out to hits which should have been his through covers by local artists. 'A White Sport Coat', 'The Story Of My Life' and 'Stairway of Love' were but 3 of Marty's U.S. hits which he missed out on to covers. Shame, because Marty could have been as big as Jim Reeves was at this time in the U.K. because, like Reeves, his voice was perfectly acceptable to the Pop market and he crossed over to that field many times in the States. I have been a fan of his since 1962 and I can imagine some American reading this to ask 'why so late?'The thing is. for the early part of his career virtually no product of his was released in the U.K.These 8 albums and singles are a tribute to his outstanding vocal ability and songwriting skills; it is just phenomenal how many of the tracks were written by Marty himself and many others were by people who worked with him so deservedly he received much of the songs he recorded royalties, but when you think how much Columbia robbed him of, you can understand Marty's in house method of recording songs. There are a few mistakes in the booklet like claiming Marty was on one label for his entire career which wasn't true and there are spelling mistakes in regards to Ray Griff and Lee Emerson, but the biggest mistake for me is the double appearance of two songs 'The Bend In The River' and 'Abilene Rose' which appeared on two of the albums 'Portrait Of Marty' and 'Return Of The Gunfighter.' Hated that back in the day and still do.The price however, is an absolute steal and these albums illustrate why someone like Jim Reeves would always listen when Marty's records were being played.

You get your moneys worth
With something like 120 tracks and over 5 hours of music you certainly cannot complain that you do not get your moneys worth. This is all 1950's music, 6 albums and all singles of that period.I prefer the later tracks of cds 3and 4 but everyone has their own tastes in music.
