An excellent coffee machine but not great value
Firstly, this machine is fantastic and makes great coffee, that's not in question, but then again so do all De'Longhi machines including my used and abused (but still working) 9 year old model which this has replaced. What is in question is the value of this machine, this is nearly 3 times the cost of an entry De'Longhi bean to cup machine and double the cost of the De'Longhi Autentica Cappuccino ETAM29.660.SB Bean to Cup which includes a milk frother and as far as I can tell has very similar features.A point of difference for this machine is it's 'slim and space-saving' design, slim it may be, but what it lacks in width it more than makes up for in length, it's almost as long as a standard depth of a kitchen worktop and this can make placement challenging as the beans/ground coffee are loaded on the top and the water (whilst detachable) is at the back. You'll need to avoid a space with a cupboard above else you'll be trying to move this heavy unit out to load the beans or access the water tank. The machine is very easy to use an there are many settings to tailor your coffee to your preference and even save these to a 'my coffee' setting so you can have your hot, extra strong, double latte to fill your favourite mug perfectly at the touch of a button. I would say that I find milk is better frothed from a separate frother (I have a Dualit 84135 Milk Frother) rather than the unit attached to the machine. I also find the milk frother included is a pain to clean which puts me off using it. One thing I struggle with is the size of the bean hopper, compared to the large machine it's tiny and I probably have to refill after 7 coffees, it just seems needlessly small. In summary this is an excellent machine, the reason for the 2 stars off is related to the cost when compared to other models in the range. If you want the a similar machine for less save half and buy the 'De'Longhi Autentica Cappuccino ETAM29.660.SB Bean to Cup, Silver and Black', if like me you like a latte I'd save further and get a 'De'Longhi Magnifica ESAM 4200.S Bean to Cup, Silver' and a 'Dualit 84135 Milk Frother'

Bean to cup 101
I do love coffee. This is rather unfortunate as I seem to have got through a lot of types machines trying to get THAT taste. I have stuck with the bottom end Delonghi Corso for the past four years, and there are reasons why as well as niggles.WHY DO YOU WANT A BEAN TO CUP?Coffee shops are ridiculously expensive and create unrecyclable waste. The machines where you tamp down the grounds are very messy and require a lot of skill, especially when you are still peeling your eyes open.Cafetieres produce muddy coffee.Instant is dull (makes my stomach churn)Pods are expensive, have a limited choice and gave me heartburn..Bean to cups are expensive initially, do need some maintenance, but pay for themselves because you reduce your coffee shop addiction (and stop eating those soggy blueberry muffins).WHY DO YOU WANT A DELONGHI?Hygiene. They are one one of the few open unit machines. Most bean to cups don’t allow you to get at the brewing unit/ diffuser. On this particular model it’s on the side behind a door. This weird little plastic thing with its two red squeezy tabs on the side and a semi circular lever on the top to remove the spent coffee pucks, with a piston in the middle needs your love. It is pushed up and down when the machine makes those funny noises. You only remove it when the machine is off and it has been returned to its compact position. Although it gets washed as part of the on off cycle, it does collect bitter coffee oils and needs a soak in a big bowl of plain water at least once a month. Coffee grounds do get mouldy moderately quickly (and attract fruit flies). Sometimes bits of grounds go astray in the machine and need to be brushed out.WHY DO YOU WANT THIS MODEL?It’s shiny..it really is a steel finish (NOT plastic)You haven’t got much counter space (it is very narrow). The water reservoir is at the back. The grinder is towards the back at the top.You want to have quick milky drinks without effort (it does have a steam wand as well-not tested to date)You want to try different beans and you can reduce the brewing temperature to reduce bitterness. This is what my cheaper Corso lacks, and sometimes making the grind coarser and reducing the quantity of grounds doesn’t work. You want a cup warmer that can easily be turned on with its dedicated switchWHY YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK AT OTHER MODELSThis one is a bit cramped and does splutter a bit of milk and water over the front. Always have a jug spare to collect the rinsed out milk tube. The grinding chamber doesn’t take many beans and the water reservoir is at the back, rather than pull from the front. Both are a bit fiddly to remove. I’m still deciding whether I like the milk foam as it’s a bit soft tasting, I like a more rigid foam. Time will tell. Trying to translate something into a flat white (his preferred drink) was a little challenging. You might want a black/ black and steel/ white finish.Happy caffeinating.

Buena compra
