Sherlock Holmes [DVD] [2009]

Great HD version

This DVD was in almost perfect but about 1/3 through there was some “interference” on screen-it didn’t last long.

Good film

I am not a Sherlock Holmes purist, so I enjoyed this film enormously, not having any preconceptions.I really like Robert Downey Jr and he was great in this - a real eccentric genius with a penchant for pit fighting which was unexpected but amusing in a way! I thought he was very convincing and did the accent well; one tiny criticism might be that he either spoke very quickly or mumbled, so it was a little difficult to hear what he was saying at times, but it didn't spoil the film. I've never been overly convinced by Jude Law; frankly a little too pleased with himself most of the time, but he wasn't that bad in this. At least he played Watson as a worthy, fighting sidekick and not the bumbling duffer he has so often seemed in the past. I also really liked the relationship between the two and there were some funny moments. The supporting cast were a little forgettable - Rachel McAdam wasn't too bad and Mark Strong was suitably nasty as the bad guy, but my attention was pretty much always on the two leads.The story wasn't bad, it did get a little confusing at times, but that might have been the mumbling section where the narrative driving the story was lost, but I thought the effects were amazing and the whole spectacle of the film and the magnetism of the leads overtook the need to follow the plot in minute detail.On the whole a really good film that brought Sherlock Holmes right up to date with a really good mix of humour, action and detective work.

The first book i ever read was "a study in scarlet" and since then i have read every sherlock holmes book. i am a major sherlock holmes fan and after seeing what the people who have given this film only 1 star because it is not accurate to the books have writen i thought i would stick my two penneth in. THERE IS NOT A SHERLOCK HOLMES FILM YET THAT IS TRUE TO THE BOOK SO LAY OFF THIS ONE!!!! I went to see this film in the cinema and i loved it! i thought as a film it was very entertaining and a good story and it may spark peoples interest into reading the books, i was not exspecting it to be true to the books and found major falts with relation to the books e.g. Irene Adler was never sherlock holmes's lover, she out-smarted holmes when Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein employed holmes to obtain a incriminating photo of himself and Irene Adler but she got away and is known as "the woman". And Mary Morstan met and was engaged to watson in "the sign of four" when her farther was murdered, the best book in my opinnion. any way i have seen all of the Basil Rathbone films and they where very very loosly if at all like the books, but i loved them! the jeremy brett tv series was very well done in terms of being true to the book but even they had made changes. and after reading the hound of the baskervilles i have never seen any thing that comes close to the books story. but the point is dont pick on this film and just take it is as the very entertaining film that it is. And if the person who wrote a 1 star review saying that "the director just stuck in a couple of fight scenes and thought he had a film" (or something along those lines) is reading this, if you read the very first sherlock holmes "a study in scarlet" he is a very accomplished bare knuckled boxer so i see no reason to leave that fact out of the film? to everyone else i hope you have found this helpful and i hope you will enjoy the film as i have and that it does incourage you to read the books because they are brilliant!!!!

Brilliant acting by Robert Downey Jr as the eccentric but highly intelligent Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law, the ever faithful, if a bit annoyed about Sherlock constantly 'killing' his dog, comrade and Mark Strong who makes a great baddie. The scenery is alive with the activity, filth, violence and squalor of Victorian life and the fights are often punctuated with humour. Clever story, love the film.

First class film two great actors, well worth the money, Very light hearted and just as good if not better than the old films about these characters.

I will never not love this film. The screenplay is excellently written, the cast is awesome and the style of the director is actually quite addictive. As a diehard Holmes addict, this has swiftly become one of my absolute favourite incarnations.Though RDJ plays his role completely differently, a lot more emotionally and probably a little more eccentrically than he was ever designed to be, his Holmes is perfect in his own rambling way. And John Watson is epic, taking no-nonsense while somehow managing to take all sorts of nonsense and becoming less of a supporting role and more of a leading one. The chemistry between them is stunning.The script is artfully witty and gives numerous nods to the originals without being pretentious about it, and while the storyline is a little fanciful it wouldn't work any other way.There are odd moments where you start to wonder if it drags on a little, if maybe the story is beginning to fade, but then it picks up again almost immediately and makes you feel guilty for ever suspecting it. Ritchie has made an absolute masterpiece and it shows in every second.
