a little more high brow than regular chick lit
Excellent and super interesting if this genre floats yur boat. I was recommended by an English degree student who loves these historical flights of fancy. Certainly worth a read just to feel a little more high brow than regular chick lit

Just wonderful!
I had to read this for an introduction into medieval literature for my university course and had trouble in putting it down. The tales are brilliantly translated and with many of the lais being very short, it meant i whizzed through the book pretty quickly. It is a refreshing read and a book i will definately pick up again.

An odyssey of French courtly love poetry.
Not unusually, Marie de France's tedious courtly-love poetry loses something in translation; good enough if you are looking for French Romance influences on Middle-English productions however. Interesting references to British locations.

Charming Tales
A charming book of short lais written by Marie de France of the 12th Century. The tales differ slightly, but all bear the same themes of chivalry and courtly love. The tales are charming and incredibly easy to follow as the book is written in modern English prose, rather than original Old French tales written in verse.

This is a wonderful collection of old old Breton tales written into poems by Marie de France in the 12th century. Who exactly Marie was is a bit of an enigma, as the introduction to the book explains. But she was unquestionably a gifted writer: her lais, written to entertain courtly audiences, vary colourfully one from another, and positively sparkle with romance, passion, and wit. Mostly they tell of grand loves between courtly young men and comely noble maidens, and there is some great obstacle to overcome. Some endings are happy, others tragic; there is always a great test of the spirit, with notions of loyalty, honesty, honour, and true love playing into the mix. The scenes when lovers get together can be downright ... (in a subtle medieval sort of way). The translation puts the poems into prose, though the language remains poetic. Altogether, you can see why these gems of stories have lasted 800+ years.
