Just what a Nex Camera needed
Only been using this two days now, but very impressed. Images seem very good, though I've only printed out 2 x A4 so far (and I'm not a pixel peeper). The lens works with the hybrid auto focus without the need to download firmware and it integrates very well with camera functions - for example, if you have 'clear view' zoom enabled, the lens will automatically zoom beyond 50mm using the clear view. There is a graphic display bar to show zooming in 'real time' - when 'clear view' is disabled in the menu, the bar shows 16 - 50. When 'clear view' is enabled, it shows the extension available. But the main thing for me (I travel a great deal) is the size of the lens. It is very compact and light and makes the nex really pocketable, at last. It is not much bigger than the 16mm prime and significantly smaller than the 18-55 which my camera came with. Really feels good on the camera, if you know what I mean. The nex body is so compact, but the lenses so far have not matched that compactness - this one really does feel as if it was made for the camera! I know it can't happen for all lenses, but it is the right approach - also adopted by Tamron - I also own the tamron 18-200, whose design takes into account the size of the body far better than sony's own 18-200 monster. Not everyone will like the motorised zoom, but to me it is very smooth and accurate. Will update if any problems manifest themselves, but can't think what they might be. Incidentally, I bought mine from 'The Camera Centre', through Amazon. I think they must be selling kit lenses detached from the body as this arrived wrapped in bubble wrap, no box or anything - very quick service and reasonable price, but at the moment it doesn't seem that the lens is available on it's own.

Great compact replacement for the 18 - 55 lens
I use a variety of lenses with the NEX 7 including the weighty 18 - 200 zoom. Accordingly, I have a large camera bag to accommodate the kit. I generally have no problem with this, but there are times when I want to make the most of the compact qualities of the camera and this is where the 16 - 50 lens scores. I can now carry a simple belt pouch on those occasions when I don't want all the kit and the range of this zoom lens suits most situations. I find no difference in quality between this lens and the 18 - 50 kit lens,

good performer
I bought it, as I needed a wide-angle lens, and it was cheaper than 16mm pancake. I had a 16mm pancake before with previous NEX camera, and wish I didn't sell it, as it was way better than this 1650 zoom lens. so why 4 stars then? cause at the end of the day it did a job really well. the photos I took on the trip turned out to be really sharp, with nice colors, and I don't mind the barrel distortion that much. it gave actually a feel of the lens being wider than it really was.also the movies filmed with that lens looked really nice - the shake reduction worked really well, and I liked the output even more than with my kit lens 1855.the lens replaced 1855 kit lens for me, and I don't think I'll be using the kit lens again. with 19 and 30mm Sigmas this little lens is a perfect combination for my Nex. it has some flaws, but for the price - it's really good.two more things:- Aperture for Mac doesn't have lens correction so the barrel distortion will be very visible. it's up to you if you like that effect - just keep it in mind- there's visible vigneting on the corners of the photos taken at the wide end - again, I don't mind it too much, as it worked well with the type of photos I took, but if you're using Aperture and don't like that effect - you'll have to take photos in JPEG with lens correction enabled in camera body.

Good products, some doubts...
As far as the product goes, it's light, it's compact and it's quiet so almost everything I ask for. The description mentioned a constant max F4, that's not true, as I zoom in to max, it went up to F5.6, not a problem to mark down the score, but not what it said on the tin, so that goes 1 star. The lens is a bit smaller than the 49mm, so surely do not catch as much light, but that's a compromise I am happy to accept with it's small and light design.I bought it from "Hangsun, fulfil by amazon", the packaging is awful, it's the lens in a bubble bag + a thick envelop. It does not looks like a genuine article, but given it's from amazon, I hope they have checked and make sure it's not a fake. So far, it works, so that's ok. that's my other star gone, may be unfair, but that's my doubt.

Not designed to last. Otherwise great little zoom with acceptable limitations
Great compact lens WHEN works correctly. It's much sharper used without profile correction (RAW) but also shows dreadful vignetting and barrell distortion at 16-17mm. Closed down to f8 was quite usable. Considering how tiny it is - great lens. Not worth investing money - ok when bought with camera.Unfortunately after some 8-10 months front element developped a lot of play. 25-30% of image (landscape) is very blurry. Left part of image needs to be focused differently than equally remote elements of the landscape. Still usable for closer objects with blurred background. When uniform sharpness across the image is needed - useless. Very poor sharpness in critical corner actually gets WORSE after closing aperture down. Very slowly improves until some f16 - ridiculous. This is my 2nd Sony kit lens (after 18-55) with exactly the same problem. 15-40 years old lenses I also use with adapters (bulletproof primes and fragile zoom) except 1 Tokina are still working fine after all these years. Sony - innovative, great cameras, but many products not designed to last. Sony service is terrible, worst experience ever.
