Can anyone explain why these and all other Wera tools are so expensive?

Plus one to Wera's answer. The quality is readily apparent on these tools. I've got a lot of hand tools from many makers, but my set of Wera sockets and wrench are by far the best of the lot. The ratchet handle is simply a work of ergonomic art, and performs every function with a grace not often seen in hand tools. You'll only feel the pain once when you purchase the set, but will get a sense of satisfaction every time you pick one up.

Where is this set actually manufactured?

The sockets are most likely made in Taiwan. Everything else in the set will be made next door to Germany in the Czech Republic where the majority of Wera's tools are manufactured.

Why there is so much play where the socket mounts to the ratchet. Why is this? This must be intentional. It seems wrong.

I have never noticed abnormal play at the socket/ratchet connection. Have used my set since 2016. However, I did get the ratchet replaced once under warranty due to a failure, probably misused it with a cheater bar :-).
