LECA® Premium Lightweight Clay pebbles, size 10-16 mm often referred to as Hydroleca are made by pelletising and firing selected clays in a rotary kiln at a very high temperature. As it is fired, the organic compounds in the clay burn off forcing the pellets to expand and become honeycombed while the outside surface of each pebble fuses to give a ceramic shell. The resulting pebbles are lightweight and have a high resistance to crushing. Being a natural product LECA® pebbles contain no harmful substances, are inert and have a neutral pH. The pebbles are resistant to frost and chemicals and will not break down in water. They are also non-combustible and have excellent sound and thermal insulation properties. Expanded clay pebbles are pH neutral, porous and have the ability to store water. The gaps between the pebbles provide good aeration for root systems. Expanded clay pebbles are used as a substrate in hydroculture / hydroponics and can be blended with other growing media to improve drainage and insulate roots from frost. They can also be spread as a top dressing around plants to retain moisture and help prevent weed growth. This Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate is especially clean with an attractive terracotta/ light brown colour making it particularly suitable for plant toppings and situations where aesthetics are important. This is a genuine and original LECA® product manufactured by Saint Gobain Please note - all quantities of LECA® clay pebbles are supplied in plain bags
