Gripping
I loved the films and series so I thought I'd try the books. Wow! It's written so well and even made me feel bad hearing the back story of the dragon. Felt connected even more to each character. On to silence of the lambs!

Good start to the series but not much lecter in the story.I get it it's mainly about the tooth fairy which was interesting. Will Graham too was an interesting character.

Legendary
Perfect. Outrageous. Gripping. Sooo much better than the film. Harris paces this book superbly and guides you through the storm and stress of the FBI but also the tooth fairy, his bio blew me away as a mid-point and one of many times I shook my head in wonder at Mr Harris.

A masterpiece for its genre
There are many, many books about serial killers and cops furthered no question in my mind that this book, by Thomas Harris, and it's follow-up are towards the top of that list.Harris writes with an authority and confidence that helps this book grip this reader and made the story crack along at a great pace.He also avoids old tropes and cliches and his characters are believable, multi-layered and develop over the course of the book.Another thing that Harris gets right is not hiding anything about the killer. We get to know him, we get to know his background and what makes him so what he does. This is about catching him, not guessing who has done what. One word of warning though, if you are after a Hannibal Lecter driven story, this is not it. He is hardly in it and doesn't really have a key part to play though it does set things up for the sequel.Overall, a fantastic example of the genre.

Good introductory thriller
Enjoyed it but the writing is a bit clunky in parts and jarring as a result. However the characters are very well fleshed out and the plot is fantastic. The way the investigation is intricately weaved and revealed is also excellent.

A solid start to the series
I feel that because of various movie and TV series adaptations, the Hannibal Lectar series carries a certain type of legend that isn’t necessarily due to Thomas Harris’ literary work. However, this book was great! Not written in the “Whodunnit” style of trying to guess who the foe is, but rather introducing the both the chaser and the chased early on gave this book a different feel, as you could play both characters motivations off against each other.Add into the mix the character of Lectar, who in this instalment is used sparingly, and there was some great tension created. Even in the few short chapters that Lectar was the main focus, there was a definite sense of unease! This book is really well written, a decent page turner, and certainly leaves you wanting more. I will be diving into Silence of the Lambs immediately!

A cracking good read
In the first of the Hannibal Lecter books, Thomas Harris introduces his infamous psychiatrist in this tale of a murderous psychopath caught in the grip of a demonic delusion. Lecter is already in jail, but the FBI needs his help to catch the killer of two families. Seeking to satisfy his sexual hunger, the self-styled Red Dragon, is already planning the next murder. Short on clues, the FBI bring in semi-retired investigator Will Graham to help track the killer, but with the murders linked to the lunar cycle, time is running out.I first read this book many years ago after seeing the Michael Mann film version (Manhunter). Although Lecter only appears briefly in this one, Harris sets the stage for the sequels, 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal'. He also introduces recurring characters, including Dr Chilton and Jack Crawford, and deftly keeps the tension on the boil as the police and FBI teams struggle to discover the identity of the killer. This is a cracking good read from a master storyteller, and even if you've seen one or both movie versions, there's plenty here to keep you on the edge of your seat.
