Many more leagues under the sea
A new novel from the writer of the Percy Jackson books. And others. I would say if you're a fan be aware this isn't necessarily more of the same. It's about reinventing and updating a certain Jules Verne story rather than any old myths. [Not a spoiler. It's on the back of the book].Recommended reading age would be twelve and up. It's pretty easy going, but it feels more pitched at that particular age, and it is a little bit violent at points. It runs three hundred and thirty three pages. It has sixty three chapters. There are a couple of opening notes about the genesis of the story.Said old story it reinvents is twenty thousand leagues under the sea. And Nemo's later literary appearance. Our lead and first person narrator is Ana Dakkar. She's a student at an academy that trains the best underwater explorers in the world. Along with her brother. Latest in a long line of her family to do this. Not least their parents. Who subsequently died.Suddenly life changes for her in an instant, when the academy is attacked and she finds they have enemies. Who are adopting a very aggressive approach. On the run with a few classmates, they have to fight to survive, and she has to come to terms with her family legacy. As it seems Jules Verne might not have been writing fiction..[Again, not a spoiler. It's on the back of the book].Good sized prose and a heroine who manages to be appealing and likeable from the off does make for something that is very readable. If you're the target age group or older. And the pages do turn very nicely as a result. Plot developments and twists are very good, and come at the right points to move things along to the next level in the story. Ana has a very decent character arc to go through. The writing has done it's research when it comes to the source material. I don't hear said second Nemo appearance ever mentioned much, so it's nice to get that in.One plot development you will either see coming a mile off, or not at all and be floored. It was the latter for me.Best of all though are the sea creatures you encounter throughout. Great creations and very appealing with it.There is also a good little central moral dilemma that is part of Ana's story arc, and it is never overstated. The level of jeopardy is just right, and does help with that page turning as well.It isn't marked on the cover as being a series, but it is one of those books that does wrap pretty much most of it up, and yet leave some things up in the air. So I wouldn't doubt if sequels followed. It does also at times feel like something written with being a movie in mind. But that would be pretty cool if it came to pass.Even though this is standing on the shoulders of a literary giant, it does a great job of being it's own beast. And it makes for a good read. Well worth a look.

Enjoyable and absorbing - once you get in to i t
I thoroughly enjoyed this rather different style of Rick's work. Seemed a bit of a slow starter but I think that was because I read the introduction etc first - better left until last and plunge into story I think, then intro more interesting after the story. As always characters and story great, loved the cook, Really looking forward to series that seems lined up nicely - hope it's not a long wait.

20000 leagues with a modern touch
If you thought captain nemo and the nautilus were long buried, think againThis modern version of captain nemo found in his ancestor Ana Dakkar is a wonderful take on the story. So enriched I couldn’t stop reading itTorn between friendship and family and the fights of her school. Fantastic

Fantastic book! Perfect for Girl of every age - and boys too... ;-)
It is a great story that is a little different from the other stories of Rick Riordan. A - it features a girl in the leading role. B - while it is still a myth it does ntot feature any deities. But it is as thrilling and as wonderfully detailed and excentric as the others. A must read. (Even if I may be too old for it I love it dearly! ;-)

Loved it
As per usual the author spins a tale that sucks you in and doesn't release you till you're done. Which is great unless you also are supposed to work a day-job and look after a family (sorry kids).Absolutely adored the story and would love to see what happens next to the characters.Brilliant.

Great author
I have not had a chance to read it yet, but if it is even close to Rick Riordan previous books it will be excellent. I have read many of his books all excellent!!
