Beautiful abalone shell

I bought 3 lots at 40g each, knowing that there would be some that would be useless for inlay work for various reasons. What I ended up with Is 48g of 99% useless, 42g of pieces of 50:50, nicely coloured in places, but either heavily pock marked, somewhat unpredictable in any kind of abalone shell you find, and 36g that I would rate very highly. I had hoped for around a 70% mix in the large size that I could use easily in my inlay work. I know the shape can prove awkward on with any shell and these are some of the better ones for the job so that is a plus. What I've got is about 40% useful overall, a little disappointing given the cost but what can you do besides hope for the best and deal with the worst? I guess it just wasn't my day. The 36g of truly useful pieces are vibrant and beautiful. As are sections of the 42g I deemed 50:50. Was it worth the amount I paid? Not really. Oh well.

These shell chips came out wonderfully when sealed in resin. That said, as other reviewers have mentioned, they do need to be washed because they’re very dusty and it’s difficult to see the colours and shine initially. If I have any complaint it’s that the bag also contained stone like pieces that were basically useless, and some bits that had no colour or shine to them. Regardless I consider them worth the money and will be buying again.

As I said , it was so dull and I had hoped I could add it to the abalone chips I had already. I should have sent it back straightaway but now that I’ve added them to my shiny abalone chips it’s too late.

I will have to look at written sizes more.
