Just ate one after five years in a hot car...
and it was quite tasty! After five year in my hot car, the expiration date was approaching, so I figured it's time to swap it out with a fresh bar. So I ripped it open and took a bite. I was surprised how good it tastes. Like a shortbread cookie. The texture was pleasant. Not brittle. Kind of crumbly, but nice. I found myself eating way more of it that I intended simply because it was really tasty! I'm sure it would've lasted several more years in my car after the expiration date. Too bad it's not in stock right now because I would love to order more.

It really does taste like a cookie
Pros: It IS like eating a crumbly cookie, assuming the cookie was a 1.5 inch thick rectangular block. I didn't detect anything odd in the taste or aftertaste. Half a ration was relatively satisfying for a whole day as long as I didn't do anything strenuous (I'm a 170 lb. guy). The manufacturing and expiration dates were clearly stamped on the back below the nutritional info. The whole thing weighs a little over a pound.Cons: Like a cookie, it can become stale if not eaten right away; i.e., still edible, but hard. You may need a utensil to cut off a block. I refrigerated my uneaten portion and it lasted for a whole weekend, but I do not know how long it will last without refrigeration. The ration is scored for 6 blocks, but IMO the scoring is for show only. The nutritional info was a little vague on the vitamins and minerals, whether it's for the whole ration or a single block. It doesn't really make you thirsty, but like eating cookies you may want to wash it down with something. Conclusion: perfectly adequate as an emergency ration for maybe a week(?). Maybe not a good idea though if you're hypoglycemic or diabetic.

Most palatable ration bar available.
I have tried three other brands of the same type of ration and this brand is slightly better than the rest. It has a mild vanilla shortbread cookie flavor. It comes as a single block with break lines molded into it. The bar is dense but not difficult to chew. The bag is sufficiently durable and it is resealable unlike the other brands. The only things that would improve this ration would be the addition of more flavors such as lemon or coconut, and the addition of individual paper wrappers for the blocks inside. It might not be thirst-provoking, but you'll want to wash it down with water (or something). This is the case with all of the brands.I will update this review after one year when I try a ration that has been left in storage.

Believe the other Reviews
Picked this bar up along with some of the 3600 calorie ones. This was the tester, along with a Mainstay bar. Between the two, this version wins out. It is "dryer" by virtue of being less greasy, and won't leave a trail on the paper like the mayday one will. Its hint of flavoring will seem bland to some, but when eaten by itself and not side by side it is pleasant, and fits the "dry cookie"ish description others have given. It arrived 2 months old while the 3600 versions were one month old, thus the shelf life for your full 5 years is good to expect. Of all the bars available, I think ER is either the top or number 2 between the main others of Mayday, Mainstay, and Datrex.Don't know if i can back up the non thirst provoking necessarily, but overall, and with the nutrients provided, the resealable pouch, and using this as a supplement as opposed to an "only" source of nutrition in a 72+ hour pack, you will not be disappointed by picking the ERbar brand.

Most delicious survival shortbread cookie so far!
I love these things. Look at the ingredients. They are literally giant blocks of vanilla shortbread. (I don't really taste lemon in them.) They are maybe a bit more bland than your typical shortbread cookies that come in a tin. I don't know how long you could realistically survive eating only this, but it's the only one of these types of emergency cookie that I've tried that made me want to eat more of it.Maybe that makes it a terrible survival ration, though. What if you ate it all because it was so delicious and you just couldn't stop, and then died because your survival food was so delicious. What if, indeed. You're welcome for the television commercial idea, by the way.

Tastes OK
I opened one and shared with 4 other people , all of us agreed that they do actually taste pretty good , they are also very filling, my only gripe is that it is one big bar and would have to be eaten pretty quick before it went off , its a shame they cant individually wrap the portions , also the scoring which is supposed to allow you to break the bar isn't much help , you really need a big knife. having said that I will be buying more as a backup, if anyone knows of a bar that has similar nutritional content and has individually wrapped portions please let us all know

I am only rating this on the expiration date on ...
I am only rating this on the expiration date on the package. They claim it has a five year shelf life but I received it in September of 2017 and it expires in November 2021. That is only four years. Hope they reach out to send me ones that truly have a five year shelf life as this product is not cheap. I also need to order more and don't want to if they are not going to have the advertised five year shelf life.

As described
Hard to review as I haven't tried it. I can just say it came quickly and undamaged and as described. Perfect for my emergency bag. I won't have to worry about replacing the food in my emergency bag all the time. I still keep snacks in there for a not so extreme emergency but having this will also give me peace of mind.
