This Is What It Sounds Like - What the Music You Love Says About You

Fun & Interesting
I bought this book for a summer+ book study. I am about half way through it. The book is way more fun & interesting than I expected. I appreciate the corresponding website & playlists that go along with each topic. I am learning a lot about music profiles & why I like the music I do. I have been able to have richer conversations about music and add new loves to my own playlist.

A Must for True Music Appreciation
Susan Rogers & Company have given us a tremendously valuable vocabulary for grasping the underlying elements at play in music. The sample recordings that are suggested make it an especially engaging and worthwhile read.

A great book for music lovers and musicians
A wonderful, broad ranging, discussion about what we like from our music. As an amateur musician I found it fascinating. The author lists music to listen to as she discusses its qualities. I spent as much time on Youtube as I did reading and had a wonderful adventure listening to, and exploring, musical genres that I would not have otherwise encountered.A great book for musicians and music lovers.

Music now sounds even better
Susan Rogers has finally done what other books on the art of music listening have failed at; making the topic FUN.Susan’s incredible story of how she went from teenage musical lover, to becoming the first female sound engineer for Prince (on Purple Rain, no less) is worth the read alone. However, the real crowning achievement of this book is its ability to explain how our brains react to music, and why we connect so deeply with certain types of music, and want to run from the room when we hear others. She gives real world examples, so you can help identify your “listener type“ and help you appreciate even some “really bad“ music that you probably dismissed as pure crap. The goal though is not to force you to expand your taste, but rather understand what pushes your buttons as opposed to your friends, who have completely different tastes. Thanks to this book, I can now forgive those people who say “I don’t listen to music, it’s just not my thing.” Turns out their brains are just wired different. I’m still sad for them, but no longer angry about it :-)
