You assemble it, and it is a box with sections. It is a hard box, that fits between the front seat and back seat. It does not expand or contract. It is made of hard material. Make sure the dimensions fit the space. It fits very snugly in my Buick sedan, but the dogs don't want to use it. But it makes for good storage, instead of throwing stuff on the floor. It is very sturdy, but the dogs still lie in the back seat only.

Is the box made of solid wood, msg, or plywood.

It’s not solid, but hard to tell what it is made of, the fabric is sewn around the wood, very sturdy. I have a 95 lbs mix and a 55 lbs husky always moving around in the back seat and so far no failures. I have one of these filled with recovery gear for my 4Runner and the other is filled with extra collars, leashes, dog stuff essentially. My guess would be plywood or particle board.
