Flimsy net, but fun for teaching the grandkids. Too light for real crabbing or fishing.
This is almost exactly what I wanted to relive my childhood with my grandchildren. Don't buy it for serious crabbing or trapping bait though, it won't hold up to much use.I say almost what I wanted, because it is not very well made & the float & strings are just thread & are pretty useless. But, I bought the cheapest one I could find, just to see if it was what I was looking for, and it can easily be made to do exactly what I need.As a child, my grandma & aunt had these nets or fish traps with fabric bases to them. They would set them in clear shallow water near shore, or just off of the dock. Then they placed a little bait in the center so we could watch the fish and crawdads come up to nibble on the goodies. I don't think we ever really caught anything when we lifted up the little traps, but we had a lot of fun watching the minnows and bluegills swim in and eat. When I saw this net set up I thought it would work just the same, even if the base isn't canvas. A word to the wise, the netting is very flimsy and will probably tear easily if you snag it on stones or sticks in the water. Also, the spring wire is very strong! It really POPS open when you unwrap it, so hold it away from your face. It comes with it's own little carrying bag, also flimsy, but sufficient for the job. I will replace the little chunk of foam block they provided for the float and also the flimsy thread. I am sure we will destroy the net after one or two uses, then I will stich better netting on it and it will do fine.Basically I got what I paid for and I have some great folding wire/memory wire to reuse when I need to make a better set up for the kids. For now, we have something that will get by while the kids are too tiny to notice the flaws. The nice part is how small this becomes when you fold it up.
