Keeps the rain off and the cold out
Wow! Ordered this on Friday evening and it was in my hands, all the way from sunny England, by Tuesday. You want a duffle coat? This is it. Warm and windproof. Plenty of room in the hood to light your pipe (I assume you have a pipe if you're buying this item) out of the wind. On the comfortable side of smart, and hard wearingI bought my regular size (I'm an XL), and the fit is a little loose, which is what I want since I'll generally be wearing this coat over a heavy sweater or jacket. Now, I may have got unlucky, but the first time I tried to hang this coat from a coat hook, the strap broke. My bad really, I should have remembered that duffles are heavy and don't hang nicely from coat hooks. In fact, back in the day, growing up in 60's Britain, it was pretty much the law that children wore these coats, and about the only way you could tell which was yours at the end of a kids' party was by the repair or otherwise on the strap. Also, it's a fluff magnet. That's also a duffle thing.I'm off now, to buy or otherwise acquire a large dog. So I can walk it in the snow and rain while wearing this coat and manfully smoking my pipe.

The best duffle coat available
Throughout my life I had several duffle coats. Starting with the original "pusser issue" of the Royal Navy, through a number of British models, most of which were more or less reminiscent of their naval precursor, then Italian coats of exotic names and extravagant wools, most of which, opulent as they might have been, had very little in common with the huge, heavy, and wonderfully useful ancestor that adorned bridges and watch-keeping stations of HM ships. Then came the Original Montgomery. It is, indeed, much lighter and softer than its true naval relative, it is more supple (although the naval issue became that with years of use), but it is as close to what Jack wore as it can only be, and that is, indeed, very, very good. The coat comes in a range of colours: mine is the original camel hair (the inside of the coats available today have a matching plaid pattern). The coat is very well finished, all seams neatly taped with the matching ribbon, and a very even stitching throughout that does, despite its strength, does not pull the fabrics. It wears easily over even very heavy sweters and thick tweed jackets, has a nifty inside pocket for small things (gloves, coins, etc.), a roomy hood with adjustable opening that stays flat on one's back when stowed away and not in use. There are two large outer pockets (as in the original, without flaps) so that you can easily put in them whatever you wish to have handy. The right length - down to the knees, so that any movement, including scaling ladders (or stairs in the civvy street) is easy. And the toggles: the right variety, woodden, on braided rope - just as they should be. The horn and leather, purportedly the MUST of a duffle coat are myths of the "new age." During the war nobody had time to play with cutting and polishing horn for the most utilitarian of garments. Moreover, both that and the leather were needed elsewhere. Mind, Montgomery does offer horn toggles and leather fastenings, but if you really wish to feel Jack, go for the truly ooriginal wood and the (slightly coarse) rope. One variety of the coat, the closest to the RN style is most regrettably not manufactured anymore - made of boiled wool, with canvas tape trim, assymetric toggle fastenings, and camel-wool coloured innside, it was as close to the naval model as anybody ever managed to come. I do have that one: it is coarser than the coat currently available, but it also brings a few cherished memories back. For all those who want to feel what a real duffle is and how well it serves, the currently available Montgomery ought to be the choice.Sizes: I am XL-XXL (depending on manufacturer) and 6'2" tall (186 cm). Montgomery's size 48 fits me perfectly, the coat is roomy (duffle must NOT fit snuggly - it is, after all, a watch-keeping, utilitarian garment under which seamen put a lot of strangest pieces of wardrobe to keep warm!): it slips easily over a heavy jacket or a sweater. However, if in doubt, contact Montogomery with your measurements. The customer service is wonderfully efficient, and the company's personnel are superbly helpful. If issues become truly complex, Mr. David M. is the person to go to - I must have brought him to exasperation with innumerable enquiries all of which he answered with utmost patience and promptness. One caveat: orders are made through Amazon, but the coat is manufactured in England and is shipped from there. The delivery is very fast - FedEx oovernight. However, be prepared to pay customs. In my case - US$ 44. Even with that, the coat is worth every penny you spend on it. In truth, despite its amazingly low price, the quality is truly splendid!

Great Value and even better Quality!
Excellent craftsmanship and good quality wool -- something you could expect from a coat twice as expensive. As indicated in other reviews, may run small if you have a more substantial size or would like to wear a sports coat/ a thick sweater underneath. I am 75" and 215 lbs, medium-large built, and fit comfortably in a XL. Long enough in the sleeves not to need a LONG. If you like Toggle Coats -- consider this one!

Beautiful Coat
Warm, comfortable, well made, and a timeless look-- what's not to like? As for the sizing, I would recommend going UP one size for the right fit. I wear a 40 or 42 in suit jackets, depending on the cut, and with this coat I needed a 44 to get the right fit. Duffle coats are supposed to have a roomy fit, as they were worn over other outer garments. For extra warmth (and vintage cool), pair it with a submarine sweater. I recommend the T.W. Kempton version, sold here on Amazon. Original Montgomery makes one as well, but the T.W. Kempton sweater (or jumper!) is less expensive.

QUALITY COAT AND VALUE FOR MONEY
This English-made coat is a winner. Beautiful tailoring; gorgeous material; historic style still in fashion.I am 6' tall and 260# and size 52 just fits me with no room for a jacket beneath. I would have ordered size 54, but 52 is the largest available, so I leave the bottom two button unhooked when sitting in a car. I can not praise this coat too highly. You won't do better for this price. BTW, I ordered this coat at 4AM on a Wednesday, and it arrived from England on Friday @ 5PM. How's that for service?

Excellent coat
Very pleased with the purchase. Overall, workmanship is excellent. The wool is richly soft but sturdy enough to provide warmth and maintain the shape and look of the coat. The hood, unassistedly, lays flat on the back of the coat, and accomodates a large-size fedora hat. The wood toggles not only contrast well with the dark blue color but can be engaged and disengaged with one hand. The interior pocket allows for an iPhone 5S or a wallet. Also, be aware the "Navy" color is a dark blue and not the "near-black blue" the US Navy issues.Functionally, the coat, in combination with a thick sweater, did well in the subzero temps the Midwest is currently experiencing.Lastly, delivery was prompt; the order was placed on 02Jan, with UPS delivering at 1000 on 05Jan.If the price is keeping you at bay, don't. It's a great buy.

Beware: no longer the quality coat it once was!
Beware: Montgomery's standards have dropped considerably over the years! The wooden toggles are rough and now come unvarnished! I spent some hours smoothing them with very fine sandpaper before applying two coats of clear outdoor varnish to try and make them more weatherproof - after all, it is a WINTER coat and therefore likely to get wet from time to time! Most of us know that unvarnished wood rots very quickly! Also, the quality of the string loops through which the toggles pass is extremely poor and rather coarse - more like garden string than the high quality cord I remember from my younger days! These loops are held in place with an absolute minimum of stitching! I'm trying to be optimistic! The neck strap is poorly designed and positioned in the wrong place, so that it cannot be done up without assistance. The hood is miles too big and totally the wrong shape so that it sticks up like a captain's tricorn rather than a snugly-fitting piece of head protection against the elements.Inside, there's one SMALL pocket only - big enough for a mobile phone, but nothing else.My coat had a totally different coloured lining than the one depicted on amazon's website, which Montgomery did change, but without refunding the return postage as promised. In summary, rather disappointing really, and certainly not the quality dufflecoat I remember from my youth and thought I was buying again now. Montgomery seem to have succumbed to 'quantity' rather than 'quality', cutting corners where they think they can get away with it, which I find is a great, great shame, particularly when their forebears tried so hard to build up a good reputation.

Outstanding, Help me restart the duffle fashion
I'm old but had a duffle coat as a kid a hundred years ago. I don't know why but I suddenly got an itch to get a new one. That may have been stimulated from recently watching some old Brit WW2 Naval war film starring someone like Kenneth More as the captain, who was wearing one.I'm 5' 8" and slimmish build. This one fits me perfectly and looks really good. Duffles are no good in heavy rain because the material is a bit like a blanket that just soaks up the water. But in any other cold weather, just outstanding. Highly recommended. In fact I bought a matching ladies' one for my partner from the same seller via Amazon so we deliberately go out together both wearing our identical duffles just to get a reaction from people. Sad or what?Although it looks the same externally, the ladies' one has a full length zip for some reason in addition to the toggle buttons whilst the men's version is toggles only. But it is as superb as the men's one.

FANTASTIC DUFFLE COAT
I'm not normally one to write reviews, however I'm so impressed with my coat that I feel I have to let people know. The coat is very well made and the quality of the fabric is wonderful. The fit is as expected, with plenty of room for a jacket or jumper underneath without either swamping you or feeling too snug. My only slight criticism would be the small size of the inside pocket, but in all honesty that's just nit picking on my part. . This is British manufacturing at its best. Thank You

Love that they are back in fashion. also they are good and tough and as i am around horses this doubles as a nice overcoat as well as being hard wearing - not what you usually have in a fashion item! wish i could afford them in all the colours

A real classic of a coat.
Very pleased. A warm and heavy weight winter coat. It looks well made and fits well, I expect it will give years of wear. With the serious discount it represents outstanding value for money.

Not a good size at all
Not a good size at all, arms were far too small and size was skimpy, especially for a man. I ordered a ladies duffle coat previously and no way is this one as good quality as mine yet these are meant to be a Montgomery make . Waste of money, buy a better one than this.

Fantastic duffle coat!
This is a fantastic coat and a great choice if you are wanting to buy a full length duffle. It is quite a heavy coat and you can tell the quality of it straight away. Don't hesitate to buy this if you're interested! Unlike others reviewers have stated, this is most definitely a full length duffle and is knee length.
