My 2013 RX350 had a knocking noise on rough roads and/or sharp bumps (similar to a bad strut mount) that sounded like it was directly above the driver's knees. After confirming the noise was in the steering column, I decided to try this for $10 before replacing the column. It might be possible to replace the damper without lowering the column but I dropped the column so I could vacuum out the broken bits of old damper easily.After reassembly with new damper, the noise was completely eliminated and has remained gone for few months and thousand miles. For reference, my RX has a 10/2012 build date and 195K miles when I replaced the damper. Full R&R time was approx. 3 hours.

So I had this clicking noise when the front wheels go over a little bump and I had no clue what it was. Then I saw a video about the clicking noise which said it was this….omg I would had never guessed it. If you take this to the mechanic you will be charged a min of $600-800 for the labor and parts cause you know they will try to replace the whole column so this is such a relieve that I found this little thing to fix the clicking noise on the Camry’s power steering motor hidden under the instrument cluster. Time it took me to do this is 1.5hrs so it’s not that bad.

This $9 damper replaced a disintegrated damper part within the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Module attached to the steering column on my Lexus RX350. This part will likely disintegrate every 60 - 70,000 miles in warmer or humid climates. Lexus wanted close to $4K parts and labor to replace the entire steering column. Problem solved, after several months of daily driving I can confirm this was the fix.
