Makes for an interesting gift and it does work if one is interested in learning the nuances of how to read it. I originally set out to find shark oil barometers and had to settle for these as the other is not sold commercially like they once were - save the sharks. Shark liver oil barometers have been used for hundreds of years to predict the weather and work similarly to these, these are just lacking the mystique and tradition of the other as these are created in a lab, but attractive and functional in their own right.They were a hit with the recipients at Christmas and made for some interesting conversation.

Very pretty, I love the little wood stand. The back of the little info sheet has a couple drawings of what to look for to predict different weather types, and they all look about the same. Obviously I wasn't going to use this an actual prediction tool, but some variation in the crystal formations would have been nice to look at. Overall, no regrets.
