My favorite manga of all time
I read a lot of manga every year but I have to say. This is my favorite manga of all time. I love my dog. He is my best friend for 13 years now. As he gets older it’s been difficult to watch him struggle a bit. Maybe this real life connection is what makes this story so heartfelt to me but I believe it will hit the same for any dog lover out there. The story is heartbreaking yet sweet and heartwarming at the same time. I love it. It still makes me emotional every time I read it. Here’s to all the stargazing dogs out there....may they keep looking to the sky with us forever.

A great manga with some issues with the presentation
I enjoyed the story a lot, but the way the art was presented in this English language edition reminded me of translated manga circa 1990. The art has been "flipped" so the book reads left to right, but the Japanese sound effects have been left untouched. That means all of the Japanese writing in this book is backwards (this bothered me since I can read hiragana, katanaka and some kanji). Also, because the art has been reversed, some of the dialogue no longer makes sense. In addition, there are several color pages which are presented here in black & white.Don't get me wrong -- I'm certainly glad to have a copy of this touching story in English. However, I would like to see future manga releases from NBM preserve the original format of the artwork, or at least make it so it's not so obvious that you're looking at flipped art. Most comics readers in 2012 are savvy enough to understand that manga is read from right to left. An example of a company that is doing everything right with their manga is Fantagraphics.

A story about a dog
It's great to write a review after several others have already explained the plot, now I don't have to ;) So far a agree with the other reviews. I just wanted to give this book the high rating it deserves and say a few things that may intice some people to give it a shot. The book is sad but not to the point of inducing tears (at least not for me). Instead, this book elegantly illustrates the unconditional love and loyalty we get from animals and how we often take it for granted. And it does this without being melodramatic or sappy. I really like how it transitions from the dog's perspective to that of the social worker. This contrasts the two views of the human-canine relationship. This is easily one of the best graphic novels I have ever read. If you are on the fence, please give it a chance!

Review of Stargazing Dog
Creative and excellent story! I bought the book because at 141/2 years old, my Samoyed-german shepherd Jake, had taken to sitting on our terra-cotta porch and looking at the stars. When I ordered the book, our house had just burned down entirely, but Jake, mom and I were able to get out and in a few days into an apartment...Though I was never actually homeless, I related to the man who takes his dog with him and lives in his car. I LOVED that he sold all his remaining possessions to get his dog surgery. Very nice and hip story....I've already loaned it to close friends who share my love for our canine kindred spirits!

Such a beautiful, yet tragic story.
This book is a beautiful story I really loved reading it. However, I would not recommend it for people who are quite sensitive to any animals death. If you have seen the films "Hachi" or "Marley and me" or "Turner and Hooch" you will know what I mean. That aside, I find myself quite sensitive to this topic as I have had 2 dogs of my own pass away, one not too long ago and I still loved this story. It is short, the art work is gorgeous and the characters are cute and sweet. I read it in about an hour or so and had a few tears in my eyes by the end but it is definitely worth reading.

sadly beautiful
Originally published in Japan in 2008, Murakami notes that this is his first story. I won't rehash the story as that's already covered in the other review, but will likewise note that it's sad. Really sad. But also beautifully sad.Fans of Takashi Murakami's art should be aware that this is from a different person with the same name. I didn't know that when I bought the book, but I'm really pleased to have found this little book. Even if it is sad.Manga fans will note that this English translation has been reversed to read from left to right, front to back. There are helpful marginal translations of the various sounds and interjections left in the original Japanese in the artwork.

Forced and misguided
Hmm. I was told by so many that this book would be right up my alley. Now, it was a fine read. Great in certain parts. But for the most part, I found it forced, and misguided.

I'll keep stargazing too
I loved every minute of reading it. That's why I decided to read the sequel that sadly doesn't have a translation in english so I had to read it in spanish. Nonetheless, this book will make you cry. Such a beautiful and sad story.

I was affected by this book.
This is a cartoon for teenagers and adults and the story is about a journey of an old man and a dog. When I read this book of a Japanese version a few years ago, I deeply moved by it because of the dog's faithfulness. I think that the author describes their feelings very lively in this book. You will be able to know the feelings that how much the dog loves the man, how much the man cherishes the dog as well. I highly recommend it for all people, especially a lot of dog lovers!!

Dead dog makes me sad.
While not leaden with much in the way of setup or character arcs as it's just one man's life falling apart until he starves to death in a field, Stargazing Dog does what it does effectively. And what it does is make grown men cry.It does have one narrative trick up its sleeve in that it's essentially a juxtaposition between the dog not leaving the guy while everyone else does, but apart from that it's a pretty straightforward tale. It is possible that you may not be moved by the story of a small dog dying because it won't leave the corpse of his master out of a sense of loyalty and love, but that is because you are a Dexter-style monster who is only reading this because he is prowling the internet looking for a new victim. I would pity you if I wasn't so afraid.
