Thought provoking!
A fast-paced story that brought up a lot of important issues. Interesting characters that grew and changed over the course of the story.

Haunting and powerful
I couldn’t put this book down! (I said I’d finish a chapter and next thing I knew I’d read an extra hundred pages.)The characters are so compelling that they still haunt me a month after I finished the book. They pop into my head as I’m falling asleep, making me wonder what’s happening with them. The author does an excellent job creating psychologically complex people that are completely distinct from each other, in understandable ways, given each of their histories. The world of the novel is a frightening glimpse into our future if climate change and industrialization of food production continue unchecked, beautifully described in lush detail that made me want to change things now in order to prevent it from happening.I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

Devoured this in 3 sittings!!
Oh my goodness - what a fantastic surprise Sentient has been for me!! This book was way outside of my normal reading genre and I absolutely loved it!!Since finishing, I’ve found myself thinking about the characters and wondering where they are & how they are doing. I have a super soft spot for Bray - I am eager to read more about her and see her discover more about her gifts, her strength & her resilience. The writing style is very conversational and easy to find the “groove” - I kept finding myself far ahead of where I intended to read because I just got so caught up in the story. Loved the transition between chapters - the suspense buildup was really well written and uses the chapter breaks brilliantly. I’m excited to see where Jay takes the characters in the next books in the series! A great read!!

The future is not what we planned
Sentinent gives the reader a look into the not so distant future through the eyes of an animal empath,an undocumented immigrant employed by the large scale animal agriculture industry ,and animal rights activists who have been driven virtually underground. The characters and vivid language will captivate you from the first chapter. The book deals with serious themes, however it could also be appropriate to share with mature teens who are seeking to understand the interconnection of all beings. I can’t wait to see what this author has planned for the characters next.

Overall, a great read. Really compelling universe and characters.
The dystopian near future that is the Sentient universe is easy to be drawn into because although there are some fantasy elements, a lot of what has happened there is going on here and now. It is not a stretch to accept much of it as a possible future reality.VanLandingham doesn't waste any time getting to the story in Sentient, we are all in from the second sentence and there are not a lot of slow spots and none that really slow down the pace significantly. I found myself surprised a couple of times that I had gone through another hundred pages. Although it looks like a long book, it is actually a pretty quick read. I went through it easily in a weekend. Even with the fast pace, though, there was still somehow time to develop several interesting characters and let us watch as they (particularly Bray and Bertan) try to figure out their lives.I definitely recommend Sentient and I am looking forward to the sequel!

Great novel
I don’t usually leave reviews even though I read a lot. I had the pleasure of meeting the author before the novel came out. So glad to! I was waiting to see the release. I couldn’t put my Kindle down. Excellent story line, characters, and content. Hope there is more to come!

Intriguing Story
This dystopian story about animal rights engaged me from the start. The presented view of America in 2040 is bleak and seems like it could be a possibility based on on where America is in 2024. I thought the characters were fleshed out and they seemed real. The three story lines for Bray, Bertran and Kage moved the story along. I really liked Bertran's story and felt engaged by it.I admit I had some trepidation about reading this one. I know it's written from a vegan animal rights point of view and I was afraid that it would come across as preachy or scolding. It did not. That view was there but I never felt berated by it.I recommend this one, it is well worth the read!
