Life-Changing
This book is a perfect blend of academic knowledge and personal stories of living with dissociation. As a professional in a mental health adjacent field, and as somebody who lives with dissociation, that duality of perspective was really important. I appreciated the non-pathologizing language around dissociation. I also appreciated the opportunity for anyone to connect with the content, even if dissociation isn't something they navigate on a daily basis. While I loved this book overall, there were some elements that I skimmed over. I think this is due to either not being ready to explore certain components of living with dissociation, or perhaps the concepts were just so far outside of my experience that I couldn't access the bandwidth needed to process them. Either way, needing to skim/graze/skip small sections did not detract from the overall message and opportunity to understand myself/selves better. If you are even a little curious about dissociation you should read this book. If you work within the mental health field in any capacity, this should be close to the top of your reading list.

Dissociation Made Complicated
I was excited to delve deeper into dissociation and hopefully find some helpful tools to help with memory, articulation, embracing my dissociation and navigating daily life, but I was instead left with a stigma about the ādisorderā as thatās all she seemed to focus on for most of the book. She name dropped people extensively while simultaneously barely relaying their thoughts and perspectives. Quite the swing and a miss for me.

Not what I expected
I really wanted this book to WOW me especially as Iād taken a recommendation for it from a trusted therapist. I was hoping to learn a lot more about my particular issue of derealization and what is going on in my brain when this takes over me. However this subject is only afforded three small mentions in passing in a total of 266 pages. I know the author didnāt want this to be a scientific book but some amount of scientific explanation would have been welcomed. I like to get to the end of a book especially an expensive one but I did find myself skimming over a lot of this in order to get theee. There is an xtraordinarily long introduction before getting to the real meat of the book. It felt as if a lot of generalisations were being made about how we āuseā dissociation without distinctions being made between different forms of it. I have never been aware of being able to use derealization to any good purpose, it just kind of hijacks me and feels terrible. Iām still not sure if the author has DID or not- nothing was made very clear. There were a few nuggets of usefulness but on the whole only 3 stars at best.
