Actually works!!! But some management required. Great for running synthetic clothes...
I have now used the soap in my high efficiency washer using only the measured cup for over two months and can write an informed review. Firstly, as stated elsewhere, after a few washes clothing does become softer and shinier if it has synthetic fibers in it (this probably because the fibers are not saturated with excess detergent). The overall stain removal of the detergent is excellent to very good and clothing does feel very clean to the touch, and works especially great in cotton linen and underwear. However, because it does not contain fragrances it can be a bit disorienting. Further, if one item with a strong smell is washed with others on occasion the other items might acquire the smell. For example, to be good to the environment we use 100% cotton terry shop towels in the kitchen as opposed to paper towels. If one towel is saturated in oils, its smell can migrate to other clothing items. This, of course, might happen with standard detergents but due to the perfume that they include it might be hidden away. So some thought might help when planning the wash (I confess we have not separated colors for years with rarely a problem). A particular plus of this detergent is that it amazingly removes **all** sweat smell from synthetic running clothes, something no other soap had ever achieved in my many years of running and biking and hiking. The clothes leave the wash and drier as new, which is quite something. An additional plus is that I am fairly sensitive to allergens and occasionally had unexplained "itch" attacks where I just felt itchy all over... even with hypoallergenic detergents. These "attacks" have not been repeated while using this detergent. Highly recommended and highly economic (do not use more than the amount specified by the included measured cup). *** 2011 Update *** I am adding an update to my 2010 review. First, I am lamenting the new packaging. From an eclectic canvas bag to a conventional plastic tub... Bring back the canvas bag!!! After using it for over a year I have to say that I have found synthetic clothes that do keep some smell in them even after using this soap... Still, the soap has outperformed all other soaps I have tried before. I am also finding that this detergent can get some natural pigments over cotton bleed (something that did not happen with Tide and other conventional detergents). Of course, I should be sorting the wash... so this is more of an operator error than a problem with the soap. Still, I continue to be pleased with this detergent and I have saved many dollars and weekly trips to the grocery store to get more detergent. Rating remains at a well deserved excellent. ** 2013 Update ** I am sorry to say that I found that after many washings, it appears that the detergent might make clothing stretch and turn "bigger". Keep an eye on it. I have compared it to (horror of all horrors) Tide Coldwater, and suspect that this Tide formulation is on pair...

Great for huning clothes
Works very well for hunting clothes. The quantity you get is very good for the price, and for HE machines, you only use 1 scoop per load ( for large loads ), and I have found that it properly cleans the clothes with no scent and no UV brighteners

Charlie’s Soap User for Life!
*** 5/24/2019 Update *** Believe it or not, I recently discovered the “heavy” setting on my front load washer. I was always intimidated to use it because the user manual said to use it on color-fast/sturdy garments. I started using it for my husband’s work clothes and saw it used a much better amount of water and got his clothes super clean. I now wash all of our clothes on that cycle, but I use the permanent press for my work clothes which also uses a lot more water than the “normal” setting. Since this change, I now use the recommended dosage of Charlie’s soap with incredibly fantastic results; I don’t think our clothes have ever been this clean. I no longer use dryer sheets (I think they contributed to the residue feel, oops) and our clothes are so soft. I am a Charlie’s Soap user for life! Sadly, my Charlie’s Soap had been sitting on a shelf in my laundry room for a good while; ever since I got my front load washer I have had a love hate relationship with it and I had to stop using Charlie’s because it stopped working for me at that time. When I had my standard washer, I would use a scoop to a scoop and a half if the load was especially soiled. When I got my front load high efficiency (FL HE) washer I used about a scoop and my clothes were left with residue. And what was confusing to me was Charlie’s Soap’s website even tells you to use an amount of detergent for the weight or size of the load, not based on whether it’s high efficiency or a standard washer, so that’s what I did. That resulted in dingy, itchy, and not so fresh clothing. I started to use the liquid Charlie’s and only used about a tablespoon of the liquid, which is half the suggested amount, and although I had pretty good results, I hated how messy it was. I then tried Nellie’s and although that rinsed more cleanly, the stain fighting power wasn’t there, then I tried Molly’s and that was even worse. So then I was talking (or complaining) to my friend who also has a FL HE washer, but she uses Norwex’s UPP, and she said she only uses a half of a teaspoon to one teaspoon of the UPP per load. I found that hard to fathom but her point was you just can’t expect an HE washer that uses so little water to perform well with too much detergent. The detergent can’t rinse clean so stains and dirt aren’t effectively washed then rinsed away. The logic was there since I know that with a normal wash cycle on my FL’er, I can’t even see the water level, it uses so little water. Finally, although it was really hard for me at first, I decided to take my friend’s advice. I had a small/medium load that needed washed. There was a grass stained shirt and some stinky campfire clothes mixed in the load and I used just a 1/2 teaspoon of Charlie’s and guess what!!?! The clothing came out sparkling clean and smelling like nothing! Just like they did when I used Charlie’s with my standard washer. I didn’t want to get too excited but I continued on this path and now I use 1/2 teaspoon with a small/medium load, 1 teaspoon with a medium/large load and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons for extra large loads (no matter the size of a load of towels I always use 1/2 a teaspoon). For bedding I use 2 teaspoons, or 2/3’s of a tablespoon, because the bedding cycle uses more water and it’s such a large load. Now I am soooo happy that I didn’t give up on Charlie’s because I finally don’t have the love/hate relationship with my front loader anymore and my clothing is just the way I like, fresh, clean and smells like nothing. I am also convinced that most people who leave poor reviews are simply using too much detergent. I know it all varies depending on your type of high efficiency washer and the softness/hardness of your water, but my washer uses very little water and my water is pretty soft so this is what works for me. So my advice is to experiment and not give up. You may not think what works is enough detergent but, it’s so highly concentrated and such a good product, when you add the correct amount it can perform the way it’s supposed to. It’s absolutely, hands down, my favorite “green” detergent ever. I never thought I would get this excited about a “laundry detergent” but I take pride in providing clean clothes for my family that I know are safe for them. And I love that it’s also safe for the environment. I still pretreat stains, when I remember, but this detergent just works so well. Sorry for the long review, I am just excited and wanted to share what worked for me!

10+ Years and Still the Best Laundry Soap Ever!
We’ve been using Charlie’s Soap for over 10 years, and I honestly can’t imagine switching to anything else. It tackles even the dirtiest loads (farm clothes, kids’ messes—you name it!) and always leaves everything fresh and truly clean without any heavy perfumes or residue. I love that it works equally well with both city and well water—such a rare find. The fact that it’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and eco-friendly is just the cherry on top. If you’re looking for a dependable, gentle, and powerful detergent, this is it. One bag lasts forever and is worth every penny!

Amazing for cloth diapers!
This soap is amazing!!! I have been searching for a scent-free detergent that actually gets rid of stains and smells. I think I just found it. My cloth diapers have never smelled and looked SO clean before and I am liking it for my regular laundry as well. I appreciate the fact that I don’t have to worry about recycling a plastic container after struggling to get the last bit of liquid out like the other detergents I have used. I am also saving money with this powdered, concentrated soap. I will buy it again.

Clean Laundry Soap
I started using Charlie’s Soap laundry detergent after getting tired of the heavy scents and suds from my old brands, and it’s been a surprisingly refreshing change. What really stands out is how simple the formula is—just pure soap, soda ash, and salt—so there’s none of the funky fillers or fragrances that give me headaches or irritate my skin. My clothes come out clean and soft without that film some detergents leave behind, and it’s gentle enough that my daughter’s eczema hasn’t flared up once since we switched. I love that it’s concentrated, too, so a little goes a long way, and the powder dissolves completely even in cold water without any gritty residue in the washer’s drum. Of course, it’s not perfect. Because it’s fragrance-free, you don’t get that “fresh laundry” smell that some people love, and if you’re used to big, bubbly suds, it can feel like nothing’s happening even though it’s working. I did notice that really greasy stains sometimes need a pre-treatment boost—Charlie’s Soap is great for everyday dirt and sweat, but I still keep a stain stick handy for motor oil and heavy food spills. It’s also a bit pricier per load than supermarket brands, so if you’re on a tight laundry budget, the up-front cost can sting, even though you technically use less with each wash.

Smelly Washer + Charlies Soap
Combination of Smelly Washer and Charlies Soap our 3 year old front load LG into a much better state then it i was before. Basically our towels smelled and that was annoying. I started to first battle this smell with bleach and vinegar and clorox washing machine cleaner and baking soda... We did a lot of cleaning. Washer would get better but smell would come back within a week. And towels still smelled. Then i found charlies soap on amazon and we tried that. I soaked our overfilled washing machine ( added extra few gallons of hot water through the soap dispenser tray) over night with Charlies Soap (perm press setting for 20 min and then powered it down) and then noticed that tub was covered in moldy flakes. As I drained water from our cleaning tube/pipe (located int he front bottom of our front load LG) I got many many more flakes. After 5-6 cleaning with Charlies Soap i continued to get these moldy flakes (even after an extra rinse). So it was clear that Charlies Soap was working but i guess my machine was in a really bad state. So i got the Smelly Washer. First time i ran/soaked my machine with the smelly washer (2 lid fulls) for about 5 hours. After it was done the tub looked clean (no flakes) and then i drained the water from the cleaning pipe at the bottom of my washing machine. This water had large chunks/cubes of brownish grayish mold. I could not believe how bad my machine was. I also by hand rinsed down the inside of my washer. I used a large water bottle and splashed water against the back side of the washing tub. i got a lot more of these moldy cubes. I did a bunch of these rinses. During one of these rinses i took a picture which i uploaded on amazon. LG SHAME ON YOU FOR MAKING SUCH A BAD PRODUCT!!! As soon as i was done i started another soak and that one lasted for 3 hours. after it was done i drained the water again and this time it was clean. i also splashed water against the back wall and all around and i got clean water out of my cleaning pipe. THANK YOU SMELLY WASHER! So now i use Charlies Soap (no softener) to wash the clothing and for 2 weeks we added small amounts (a pinch) smelly washer to our loads. the laundry room does not have smell any more. towels have a mild smell of Charlies Soap. Things it did not do is it did not remove the black mold stains from the rubber lip of our washer. We soaked paper towels with Clorox Washing Machine Cleaner and put them against the stains and that has removed 80% of the stain. Also if i close the door of our washer (even after it has been 2-3 days since laundry) for 3-4 hours and open it i still smell mold so i guess i did not get it all out. but over all Charlies Soap and SMELLY WASHER really helped!!! The most important thing is that this cleaning fixed eczema on me and my toddler. Our 2 year old toddler had really bad eczema all over her legs and back and arms. We have been trying to get rid of this eczema since she was 1 month old. We tried a lot for different lotions and tracked her diet to see if we can eliminate allergies. Nothing worked! She would scratch a lot some days non stop (we would have to hold her down) and most of the time she would scratch to blood! we constantly put steroid cream on her and even that was not helping. the amazing thing is after I cleaned our washer her eczema is GONE!!! she stopped scratching! In 2 weeks her skin cleared up 99%. She still has very small patches but it is much much better. we stopped using steroid cram. I always suspected that her eczema was environmental but we thought it was chlorine. She had a bad eczema on her had. Last week we switch her hand soap to Babyganics Foaming Hand Soap and that took care of that last eczema spot. Now that i see her without eczema i realize how much it was affecting her life. she is now much less edgy, sleeps better. i don't see her twitch and scratch. It just brings joy to my heart to see her being not bothered by this eczema. Also very unexpectedly my skin cleared up too. I thought i had acne on my back and i had a lot of dry skin on my upper legs. my "acne" and my dry skin is magically gone. THANK YOU Charlies Soap and SMELLY WASHER and (i guess) Babyganics!
