As I read this book, I kept thinking of preachers I know who would benefit from the advice. Usually they were in the field about two or more years and in need of a few pointers for improving multiple dimensions of their preaching, sermon preparation, delivery, pastoral theology, etc.This book is not a systematic strategy for preparing sermons. It does not give beginners a foundation; it is for practitioners. I call it more of a grabbag of valuable insights from a very wise and sought-after veteran. Such topics as focus in preaching, how to choose and use illustrations, dos and don'ts, etc. are discussed.Kalas' idea of Preaching From the Soul or "Soul Preaching" is that each preacher has a specific, God-given manner of preaching, and no one should mess with that. Any study habits, delivery idiosyncrasies, style, and so forth must correspond to the individual; otherwise, you have lifeless (soulless) preaching.

Preaching is a daunting task. The preacher is not just speaking but attempting to touch souls with God's truth. Dr. Kalas provides a nice blend of helpful advice in how to do this better while respecting and encouraging the one called to do it. I felt judged and challenged but taught and empowered. For this I offer sincere thanks.
