Can you connect a dvd player to the hdmi input to watch movies?

Connie the answer is Yes. If you have a dvd player with hdmi......you can watch a movie with it...and i would leave the p400 plugged in so you can watch the movie in the highest brightness setting.

Can it be mounted up side down from a celing? (does it have a way to flip the image?)

Yes. The image can be upside down and flipped for front or rear projection.

does it have to run off the battery?

Cindy....you can charge the battery and watch your favs.....We for the first time charged it and once full...watched a cartoon for the kiddos. My husband then told me to plug it back in after 30 minutes....because he said it will show Brighter if plugged in. Well he was right as usual...just go to Settings and Boost it up!!! ....it's a Great projector.
