Little and Mighty
Impressively designed to be compact and tidy for travel. You can efficiently swap out your colors as needed and it provides more than adequate mixing space. I like this palette so well that I sometimes also use it impromptu to set up in rooms other than my studio. I have other plain air palettes but find myself using this one the most.

One of my favorite art supplies EVER!
One of the most brilliant art supplies in my bag! Not sure of what I did before I owned this thing, but I sure am happy that I’ve been enjoying this one for several months now. I love the attention to detail with the rubber band thing that holds the piece used to keep everything closed and together. That piece loosens some over time, but when the rubber band piece is put directly under it in storage, it holds the clip piece perfectly in place. So it not only holds it to keep it from getting lost while the palette is in use, but it also keeps it secure in travel. The size of this is probably my favorite thing about it. If I’m mixing bigger washes I do find that I need a bigger mixing area, but I just bought a cheap, larger flat rectangular one to keep in my art bag for those bigger projects, & it works perfectly while still cutting down on extra bulk as I tote my art supplies around town. This palette’s size and functionality are perfect, & I still get this goofy smile on my face every time I pull it out to use it and think again about how much easier it’s made portable painting for me. I don’t think it could have been planned out any better! I also like to paint in bed in the evenings under a daylight bulb as I’m winding down, and this makes even that process easier and more compact in the space I’m taking up next to me in bed. If I’m too lazy to get up and dump the water out because I’m falling asleep, I can just put it on the nightstand to be tossed in the morning without having to concern myself over water rings that might have been left by my standard ball jar that I’ve usually used for water. I keep hoping one of my kids or one of my nieces and nephews will take up watercolor so that I can be the cool mom/aunt to gift them with something as nifty as this! Kudos to its creators. It really is something special!

Excellent Watercolor Travel Palette
This is a great travel watercolor palette. Well-designed and sturdy, this palette is a joy to work with in the field. I really like the design most of all including the case which converts into two cups for water and/or holder for watercolor essentials. The cups also have a built-in brush holder. The only minor dislike is that the half pans were glued down onto the palette, but gentle use of a palette knife helped pry them loose quickly. I also hope standard half pans will fit when the time comes to replace - fingers crossed. For comparison I have the Windsor & Newton Cotman 12-piece set. Both palettes are similar in color and size when closed. The features of the Portable Painter Palette are superior when opened for use. I enjoy both palettes, but the Portable Painter gives me less to carry for outdoor sketching and more mixing space. See photos for comparison of both palettes when opened and closed. Overall, this is a great lightweight palette.

Thoughtfully designed and handy for travel - with caveats
The Portable Painter watercolor palette is a great design but is NOT one-size-fits-all if you intend to balance it on your leg. It is thoughtfully designed to set on a flat surface or wear on a seated thigh--if your leg is wide enough. Mine isn't, so the palette isn't very stable when used that way. Unless set on a flat surface, both cups must hold water to balance the unit. The handy 2-literally-IN-1 brush offers two size options. I like the fine point on both, but neither carries a very full load of either water or paint in the synthetic bristles. I would like an option of a fuller-bodied flat in the larger size, paired with the smaller, fine-pointed round. The half-pans are a convenient, compact size and are interchangeable with Cotman/Winsor-Newton half-pans. But as others have pointed out, they are not easy to remove from the base box, which, though it keeps them in place, makes them difficult to swap out or clean to replace a color. Both the paint wells and the lapped mixing wells must be dry before you close up the box to prevent creating a multicolored mess. And you can tip the palette if you mix too vigorously on the folded out mixing wings. I have adapted mine by switching out the brush(es) for a slightly more thirsty travel brush than those provided, or a supplemental brush can be tucked under the plastic band that encircles the kit (intended to help you keep track of the metal slide that holds the kit together when not in use)--the band can be wrapped around one of the water-cup legs when the palette is being used. I also use four of the small inner mixing wells to hold extra colors beyond the intended dozen, and in the wider one in the center, I fastened a bit of sponge to absorb excess moisture from my brush as needed.

Love, love, love it!!!
Did I say I love it? Yes, I do! I bought this so I could go on vacation and not miss out on my painting. It works phenomenal - so much so that I still used it once I got home. The only thing to watch out for is to make sure that you never lose the little metal piece/slide on clip, because that’s what holds it together once you put it away. So long as you put it in the band when it’s not in use, you’ll be OK. It’s a great design that works very well! I highly recommend it.

Absolutely love it!!
This portable palette is a must have for plein air! It will hold a lot of watercolor paint. I love that it can hold clean water and dirty water. It’s stable on a surface or across the knee. I like how the travel brush is two in one. The mixing palettes has enough depth to where you won’t have unwanted colors mixing or spilling off the surface. I love how something so compact is so versatile to use! Can get so much usage out of this portable palette for a fair price of cost. It is now an essential in my plein air bag! I highly recommend this portable palette to other watercolor artists!

Perfect for travel and spur of the moment outdoor painting. As they say, "just add water", and paper! It really does contain everything you need for watercolour painting on the move, and is so small and compact that it fits anywhere, taking hardly any space up. I was initially put off by the price, thinking that it was a lot for what it was, but it's well made, not flimsy, feels as though it'll last and last, and hands down beats my cobbled together 'travel kit'. The paint pans (half pans, containing student quality Winsor & Newton paints, which I think still beat most other pain ranges out there) are secured underneath them with a blob of sticky 'glue' (like the stuff they use to attach new bank cards to the covering letter) and if you get something thin down the edge of the pan between the pan and the main body of the palette (I used a small pair of nail scissors) you can flick the individual pans out if you want to re-order the paint colours or swap them for other colours. Even with the gluey stuff removed, though they rattle around when moving, they don't actually come out. The makers seem to have thought of everything. It balances well on a variety of surfaces thanks to the twin water pots, which not only allow it to balance on many things, means that you can keep one of the pots for 'clean' water while using the other for rinsing your brushes. The water pots are actually the covers of the kit, which in use clip securely onto the paint palette section, the main body of the kit. There's even a travel sized brush included. Overall, perfect for travel. I doubt you'd be able to find a more compact complete travel painting set. It's well made, seems to be good quality, and despite my initial doubts I'd say is actually good value. Perfect as a treat for yourself or as a gift for the watercolour painter in your life.
