Q: I am not clear on the way this ladder is mounted? It looks as if it just hooks over the side of the boat but they mention keyhole plates? Huh.

There is mounting plates you have to secure to the top of the gunnel. It does go over the side of the boat. The mounting plates will secure the ladder. I also tie a rope from the cleat to the ladder in case the ladder comes off the bracket. It will happen on choppy days.
