Great product
This is a great item, especially when used with the "WI-Drive" App on the Kindle Fire (2nd gen, not HD). This works flawlessly.I installed the WI-drive APP on my Kindle Fire (2nd gen, not HD), without problem. This item works flawlessly with the Wi-Drive APP (also at Amazon.com). The WI-drive app along with the Wi-Drive allows one to transfer, copy, or delete files between devices....IT ALSO allows one to RUN FILES (such as music, video, etc) DIRECTLY FROM THE Wi-Drive for use on your Kindle, PC, MP3, cellphone, etc...WITHOUT HAVING TO TRANSFER ANY DATA. So you can have music, video (documents, etc), STORED on the Wi-Drive WHILE VIEWING them on your Kindle, PC, MP3, cellphone. This is great if you don't want to take up additional memory on your device, but want the convenience of easy (anytime access) to your content, it's also great for back-up. (Some good sites for Public Domain items such as books, music, video, etc., in addition to Amazon, include : Gutenberg.org and Archive.org).The Wi-Drive is a WiFi storage device (from 8 GB- 128GB), that can connect via USB to a PC, MP3, cellphone, etc. for charging &/or data transfer.......the Wi-Drive CAN ALSO DIRECTLY CONNECT TO a KINDLE, PC, mp3, cellphone, etc., via WiFi as the Wi-Drive is itself it's own WiFi source (so that if you turn on the Wi-Drive's OWN WiFi you can share data from 1-3 devices simultaneously without the need for a wifi router or hotspot, but also allows you to use it in Bridge Mode with a wifi router). For those of us who have complained about the Kindle's lack of expandable memory for easy data storage, the Wi-Drive (while a lot more expensive than a memory card), serves well. The Wi-Drive is a bit smaller (in size and weight) than a traditional cellphone. To use the Wi-Drive (which comes boxed with a Mini-to-USB power cord with a detachable USB-wall outlet adapter, and brief manual that can also be found at: [...], press the power button on the upper right side of the device (it will light, green is fully charged, yellow partially charged, red low charge), wait a moment until you see a small flashing blue light on the upper front of the Wi-Drive (that indicates that the WiFi is turned-on and is "active"), then use this App (of course first making sure that WiFi is also turned-on on your device/ Kindle, PC, cellphone, etc.). To charge the Wi-Drive plug a micro-USB into the Wi-Drive and the USB into a PC, or into a wall outlet as the Wi-Drive comes with a USB cord as well as the USB wall outlet adapter. The Wi-Drive evidently, can store any type of file, the manual indicates that IT CAN OPEN (without the need of a third party app) the following types of files: TXT, PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MP3, MIDI, OGG, WAV, MP4. The WI-drive User Manual also indicates that it can be used with Windows XP, Windows 7 (I'm running Win 7 64-bit Home Premium), Win 8, MAC, Linux and Android operating systems. To use the Wi-Drive App with the Wi-Drive, touch the APP to open it (after you've first turned on the WiFi on the Wi-Drive and your Kindle (or PC, MP3,etc, and have verified that you are connected....on the Kindle Fire go to wireless settings > select "on" > under available networks you will see "Wi-Drive," after connecting the first time it will thereafter connect automatically when wifi is turned-on for both devices ).On your Kindle (PC, Mp3, cellphone. etc), you will see on screen: two lines (1).. searching Wi-drive (that will quickly change to "Wi-Drive") and (2).."Local Storage" (on your Kindle, Pc, Mp3, etc). to view files on the Wi-Drive tap the line that says "Wi-Drive". To view files on your Kindle, PC, MP3, etc Tap "Local Storage". IMPORTANT: to do anything with the files you have found (on the Wi-Drive, or Kindle, etc) you MUST PRESS AND HOLD THE FILE SELECTED UNTIL A SUB-MENU APPEARS ON SCREEN, as that will be the only way to transfer, copy, or delete files (unless the Wi-Drive is connected to a PC via USB). WHEN THE SUB-MENU APPEARS JUST SELECT THE DESIRED ACTION an continue to use this app to deal with the files as desired. For example, to play a video that you've stored on the Wi-Drive: select "Wi-Drive" (not Local Storage), browse to the desired file and then tap/touch the file...if you tap it, it will start playing using your Kindle's default application, if you touch it for a moment or two, you will have the option to copy or transfer it into your Kindle's Local Storage. This works for PDF, EPUB, Txt, Mp3, picture files etc. If you have created a drawing, document, etc on your Kindle....select "Local Storage" > browse to the desired file > tap & hold the selected file > select the desired action (e.g., "Copy To") > if you've selected "copy to" as the desired action then > go to "Wi-Drive" (instead of "Local Storage") and > select the folder (if any) where you want to store the document, book, drawing, etc. While I like the "ES File Explore" APP for generally browsing files, Just REMEMBER TO CARRY OUT FILE EXPLORATION, such as copy, transfer FROM WITHIN THE WI-DRIVE APP. It's really rather straightforward once you've used it a couple of times. And frankly, once you've have used it a few times you might find yourself acknowledging (as I did) how easy it is to use, despite any initial trepidations.

Great but still small
UPDATE: Took it for an 8 hour car ride (4 each way). Battery lasted around 4 hours. Every time I go to connect (Ipad2 and New IPad Mini) I have to turn the Wi drive on, give it a minute, connect the iPad, load the wi drive program, disconnect the iPad, close out and reopen wi drive app, repeat 3 - 5 times until it works correctly. A little annoying. Once everything gets connected and it shows the videos it works without a hitch. Very important since fiddling with an IPad while driving is a dangerous nuisance. Still wish it connected faster and smoother. Our 3 YO son jumps from a game, to a show, to a movie, then back to a show, etc so 12 hours of video simply doesn't suffice. After some games, TV shows, and a few movies the ipad gets full. After some research I found 3 options- the WiDrive, a device that lets use you SD cards, and the GoFlex. I chose the WiDrive mainly due to the price and the thought of switching out SD cards seemed like a PITA.I Like:-Loading videos was a easy.-If your child can navigate air video server then they will have no issues with this.-App is 90% stable, 100% while streaming-I didn't have to purchase additional SD Cards/I don't have to continually switch out SD cards.-USB charger means you can charge through a universal USB charger, USB car adapter, USB battery backup, etc.-Internet pass through/bridge is very easy to setup and worked well for browsing-Videos load quickly and stream well (3 year old + buffering doesn't work so well)-I use Videora to convert our backup movies so I can adjust the quality to 1028k. This means that movies and TV Shows take up 1/3 the space vs. ITunes. Quality is still great and I can fit 20+ movies and 30+ 1/2hr TV Eps.-despite not being the most well built item, it will do better with a fall vs. a traditional disk drive (GoFlex for instance). This is due to its solid state memory.-Appears to use a standard mini USB that we all have 10 of at this point. What I Don't like:- The battery life at 4 hours isn't great. I haven't tested it for 4 hours -full disclosure-it will let me plug it I'm while streaming but there is no indication it is charging. Won't know until we are traveling.- It looks nice but a small amount of pressure shows that while it looks like an iPhone it isn't as sturdy. If you order this, order a case for it too (I did today).-32GB is too small for more than one child if the age/interest gap is significant.-No Charging light (maybe i'm missing something) or battery status in-app-No USB3.0 means video copying takes a while. Doesn't bother me since I can rotate things out every 3 months or so but if you wanted to throw on a movie real quick for a subway ride you might be unhappy. What I'd change:This is difficult as the price was a driving factor. More features means more cost and I bought this due to the price. I would like to have seen it utilize USB3.0. Thicker and a larger battery would have been a great trade off. A charging status LED and the ability to plug/unplug it while streaming (or at least clarification) would have been nice too. Finally, a carrying case or neoprene sleeve would've been a cheap but welcome addition. Conclusion:Very happy overall and looking forward to giving it a test run in real life. Holds a fair amount of stuff and works quite well in initial testing. As mentioned above, this is great for 1 or 2 kids but I would go with the GoFlex for multiple kids vs the 64GB WiDrive if you can find it for $99. At $199 You're paying for a traditional laptop hard drive that has a high probability of failure after 1 or 2 drops.

Very Satisfied with my WiDrive
I bought the WiDrive to take it on vacation. I downloaded a free DVD Ripper (HandBrake) from the internet, watched a You Tube video on how to copy my DVD's (only ones I own, I don't support the idea of ripping people off) and transfer them to the WiDrive. It worked perfectly. The WiDrive is very intuitive, it is like having any other external drive on your computer. I have a Mac so I just plugged the WiDrive into the computer. The computer recognized the WiDrive like it would a thumb drive. After I ripped the DVD's I wanted I just dragged them onto the WiDrive. After downloading the App for my IPad, I turned on the WiDrive let it boot up and the IPad recognized it in the network settings, I changed it to use the WiDrive and off I went. One caviate, if you drag a movie that you downloaded from ITunes it will not play on the WiDrive App, however it will play in an Internet window. I entered the IP address of the WiDrive in the address line and then was able to play the movies from ITunes flawlessly. If you bookmark the address which I did it takes no time to watch a movie saved on the WiDrive from your ITunes movies. It is all explained in the instruction better than I just did, but it was very easy. The battery life was perfect for my use, movie on the plane, music by the pool. It went a full 4 hours for me before I recharged it.You will be satisfied with the WiDrive and it is the best alternative because you still can get on the internet, which some others would not let you do.Very happy and I highly recommend the WiDrive as a solution for extra storage for your IPad or IPhone.

This is the smartest thing that has come out for sharing files. Very easy to download files into my I-PAD 2 or any device that is Bluetooth comparable . Also has the ability to share files with my friends. ( just let them know the password and it will load automatically onto their device. A very convent way to share your picture , files, and music. A fantastic product from Kingston. Keep up the good work

Why?-drive
This is an almost-useless piece of junk. The wifi bridge works sometimes and not other times. You can't create a playlist for stored music making it close to useless during a long drive. It's worth $10cad... not a dime more.
