Tempest Clock is a combined product (stand + phone app) leveraging the idea of using the smartphone accelerometer for turning it into a chess clock. This is a brilliant design where on the one hand you get the nice physical touch of a clock where you are able to push buttons, and on the other you have the flexibility that traditional non-software clocks can't give you. The clock mechanics feel very solid, and overall the phone is very stable secured into the leather fissure, regardless of how hard you may knock on the clock. The only minor annoyance is that you will likely have to take it out of the case to fit it. The fissure is pretty long, fitting any phone smaller than a phablet, but pretty narrow. The price tag is that of a product targeted at enthusiasts and advanced hobbyists, where you pay a plus for the materials and in return get in return a very slick finish. It may not be for everyone, but you're definitively getting what you're paying for. It's a mystery to me how this is not more popular. Maybe the criticism behind potential issues for tournament play, where you may want to avoid using electronic devices anywhere near a chess board? Regardless of whether the tournament mode enforcing your phone into airplane mode will ever be "whitelisted" by FIDE and the like (why not if this gets the appropriate marketing/media attention?), you still get a fantastic gadget that is sleek and "just works". Overall, while the product is very much finished and usable from day 0, the potential of Tempest is still largely untapped, and the development team is very keen on listening for product improvement / app development.

For me this is the perfect chess clock. The base is sturdy and well designed, looks cool and works flawlessly. The sound when pressing the paddle during play is subtle and not distracting. Setting up the clock is exactly as advertised -- intuitive, easy and feature-rich. I am using this with an old iPhone 6 and even with its small screen (compared to some new giant phones out there) the display is easy to read. My husband is hard to buy gifts for so I was thrilled to find this. He is an avid chess player but the equipment he and his friends play with is so cheap (the pieces are worn out plastic and they carry around dirty roll up placemats). It was way overdue for an upgrade! It’s tricky to buy such a specific gift for someone who is as into it as he is, but the full bundle really nailed it. It’s the same size as his old set and is portable even though it’s all wood - it fits in a very nice messenger bag. The clock is clever and easy to use, it’s a dock for a phone that runs chess clock software. The pictures do not really convey the quality of how beautiful and well made this product is. We took it out to a bar to meet up with friends and the chess players there were literally drooling over it! Highly recommend!

something about how this item was marketed made me think it was a clock. It is not a clock. It is a docking station. The video doesn't show that you use your own cell phone, it never shows someone downloading the app and then attaching the cell phone to the docking station. They always just show the cell phone and the docking station together, making it look like a clock. For $85 which is the price after tax and shipping, I want a real clock.

I thought it was a really nicely made device, the app seemed to work really well, the leather and wood are very nice, but my phone was just too awkward to use properly. I have a pixel 8 pro, its a pretty big and heavy phone, and the camera bump was making it flop forward constantly when in use. if youre not using an xl phone, itll probably work immediately. My phone, I could get it to sit by lifting the leather lip instead of pushing into it, but for something 80 dollars I just want it to work, i dont want to jump through hoops. Could I lift the leather lip and get my phone to work correctly? Absolutely, but I could also just get a cheaper clock and not jump through any hoops. It was a hard decision to send it back. knocked off a star because their website says all pixel models supported. Sure, technically any phone with gyro should work, but there was no instructions/advice for what if your phone is on the larger side and doesnt sit correctly by default.

Works exactly as advertised. HIGHLY recommended!!! Why didn't someone think of this before?! So many options and display makes is SUPER easy for my 5 year old to read the display and see how much time he has left.

Many time where the leather is still unsoftened it won't allow the tilt to register onto the app so it's kinda been a useless buy..
