I'd advise against it. In Q & A for the heart rate monitor which uses the same strap, some said this strap will slip out of place during push offs. The strap with the HRM swim is designed to stay in place, even when pushing off.

By itself it does nothing. It requires the Garmin HR Monitor Module that snaps on. Therefore, if you have the Garmin HR Monitor module, which works perfectly with the Edge 500, then this strap will then, by extension, be compatible with the Edge 500.
