Health o Meter Dual-Reading Beam Scale

This is the most important item for weight management! It is my second one. My first one lasted over 10 years and had I kept the instructions, I’d have known it wasn’t broken during the move, it just came undone. It’s super easy to assemble and so accurate that you won’t be surprised when you visit the doctor. I use it daily and don’t let my weight go more than2 lbs over. Since I’ve been without one for a while, I have some catching up to do. I am happy to say that the price is nearly the same as when I purchased my first one at least 15 years ago. I wish I could say the same about my weight during the absence :-) This truly kept me in check, controlling my weight. I think every home should have one. Well made and a bargain at around $225.

I just received the Health O Meter Physician's Balance Beam Scale ($157 including shipping) yesterday. It required very little assembly (four nuts and one hook) that took less than 5 minutes once I read the instructions. There is a tool included that looks like a bracket that fits the nuts. The scale was well packed and arrived in good condition and it was delivered from Amazon in three days, which was quicker than I expected. Once set up the scale was off zero about a 1/4 of a pound. There is a simple screw adjustment on the left side that took about 15 seconds to zero the scale out. So far the scale is accurate and reliable. I can get off and on the scale and it weights me the same each time. I put known weights on the scale and it correctly weighted them. I was actually hoping for a little heavier construction, but for normal home use this should hold up several decades or longer. Also you need to put it on a solid floor, not carpet. Mine is on carpet which was not a solid enough base so I put a heavy wood board down on top of the carpet to form a hard surface base for it which took care of making it a solid base on which to rest. Overall I am very pleased with this scale for this price and I would recommend it to anyone needing an accurate home scale. For a medical office, or for very heavy usage, I would go with a balance beam scale that is a little heavier construction, but which of course will cost substantially more. I have been using or trying to use a very expensive digital bathroom scale for years and it would give almost random reading in a range sometimes as much as 20 pounds of variance on my weight from one minute to the next and only occasionally would it be accurate. It gave general information but nothing of value to someone dieting. The old spring style bathroom scales I grew up using were more reliable than that digital scale. After those scales, this medical scale is a real joy to use. I think a simple (non-digital) balance beam scale is the only way to go if you want accurate and consistent weight readings. Also at age 65 and after two major spinal surgeries it was nice to find out I only lost 1/2" in height from my youth.

I've seen the negative reviews, and maybe some things changed, because my unit was delivered in a LARGE cardboard box that looked a little battered on the outside. However, the scale was nestled in form fitting Styrofoam and was in perfect condition. It assembled easily, 4 nuts to tighten the post to the stand, and hook on the rod to the balance beam. I zeroed it per instructions and have been using it nearly 3 months now. The weight is consistent. It matches the weight I recorded at my Doctors office. The unit is well constructed for the job. I have had no issues with binding, accuracy, or motion. The balance beam moves up and down without binding, and is as good as the higher priced one in my doctors office, in my opinion. I am on a mission to lose 100 poinds, and I need the scale to be accurate because I am tracking food and weight daily. My old digital scale had problems with consistency and accuracy. This scale is perfect! The ONLY negative part of this instrument is its size. It actually has a smaller floor footprint then my digital scale, but the post and balance beam means you can't slide it under a cabinet easily. If you want a good, solid, reasonably priced, accurate scale, have the room to place it, then this is the perfect scale for you. The product was easy to assemble and seems to be as accurate as the old one. However the overall appearance is cruder. The weight(mass) is not easy to read for someone standing on the scale; redesigned weights could fix that problem. I miss the built-in level. I also found the height rod hard to move and adjust.

The scale just sits there and works. That's all I ask of a scale. Unfortunately, all too many digital scales don't. Oh, they look nice. But they don't work reliably. This one does. It's too simple to not work. And you don't have to worry about batteries. Sometimes, the analog old ways are best.

For me, there really is no substitute for a medical scale. I already had one at home, but I'm staying at our family cabin in a remote area of British Columbia, and found myself having a "conversation" with the spring-style scale every morning: stepping on and off to see if I could get consistent results. Since I had recently lost some weight, I did not want to have a plus or minus factor of 3 pounds or so. Now I have this scale and can track my weight effectively. Hats off to the vendor for getting this delivered to me in Egmont, BC. The scale shows both metric weight and pounds.
