Daredevil & Elektra By Chip Zdarsky Vol. 1: The Red Fist Saga Part One

Gets better and better
Zdarsky's Daredevil has been one of Marvel's best series since it first came out. Four years and it's still just as good, if not better. Love all the ongoing plotlines and supporting characters. I'm glad that this wasn't one of those 10-12 issue runs that we see far too often. Looking forward to more.

Rushing toward a conclusion
The first volume of this new run, and the capper to Zdarsky's time on the book, is an interesting affair. Breaking from the normal flow of Daredevil runs and divorcing the character from the baggage of some of the standard tropes. But it's frustrating in that it's very rushed. An issue begins telling us the characters now have powers after Daredevil and Elektra complete a ceremony. This was never mentioned before nor in the issue this happened. It just is. There's still a really weird reliance on Spider-Man as a moral authority and it's disappointing. The inconsistency in the art continues to be one of the major drawbacks of this run. Checceto can't seem to do more than 2 issues in a row. La Torre has a decent half-step down style but sometimes it's drastically different. But it feels like issues of the run are burning through months worth of plot with little to no explanation. Just frustrating given an interesting premise.

Four stars because of the art
Like my title says I have it on four starts mostly because of the art. I enjoyed the work of Marco Checchetto in the 2019 Daredevil run as well. I know this saga is not well liked and I understand why. It's not perfect, it's trying to aim higher than maybe it should. This collection is also only the first five issues, not a lot seems to happen, but also so much seems to happen too. But I like it enough for the art and while the story is a little over the top at points, particularly in the first issue with not much reason as to why other than Reasons, it's not the worst Daredevil I've read.

This is about the delivery not the product.
I love Chip Zdarsky's run on Daredevil. This is his most resonate book for me. I wanted to support this title to the point of pre-ordering this volume. I was incredibly excited for this new chapter and I was completely disappointed by the shipping and handling. The damage this book was dealt is inexcusable. I may buy some hardcovers but I doubt I will ever order paperbacks here.

Very solid start
This is a very solid start to the new volume. It feels bigger in scope and feels like it's building up. There is more of a focus on Daredevil now that he's back but Elektra has some good airtime too.

Ninja Magic
Daredevil and Electra must form a special bond in order to save the world from The Hand. There is plenty of ninja style action with the return of old allies and foes. Great art and story telling.

Chip Zdarsky At His Finest
Big fan of Chip Zdarsky and his Daredevil run. Despite this being issues 1-5, it's more of a continuation of his previous series that was issues 1-36 plus the Devil's Reign mini. The art is fantastic and lots of detail. Wish there was more bonus features included instead of just the variant covers.

The plan?
This was another good book in the Daredevil/Chip Zdarsky series. It is just not what I was expecting. I thought there would be more ninja fighting, and in fairness later on in the book, there was some, but those parts seemed to be rushed over. As there was more concentration on the story, I could forgive this.Daredevil had agreed to join Elektra as in the Fist. To oppose the Hand. However, Daredevil has a few things to sort out in New York as well as recruit a few people along the way. Old friends, allies, and enemies return. Prophecies will be fulfilled, and Daredevil will also realise just how scripted his life might have been.A bit of a confusing back and forth in the timing of the "therapy" sessions Daredevil is giving to what is happening now and a little while later. That was the main reason I did not give this book five stars. I am looking forward to the battle promised in this book to be in the next book. The book finishes with a thumbnail variant cover gallery.
