Q: Is it hard to set up?

No. It is easy. A little tricky at first but once you do it, it will take even less time.

Q: Can I put a sterno can inside for heat instead of wood?

I don't see why not. But then you could use just about any kind of camp stove for that. The whole point of this design is to be able to use it when you don't have (or don't want to use) canned fuel and only have (or only want to use) just a few natural fuel sources (sticks, pine cones). It's designed to make the fastest and most efficient use of the small natural fuel sources you have by sucking air up into the stove to create a quick-start, clean-burning, hot-enough-to-cook-over fire with minimum fuel.

Q: What is the limit of weight of pan that can rest on it?

I would use smaller, lighter-weight pans BUT there are stand-alone campfire grill racks that you can get that would allow you to cook in bigger pots and pans and still feel stable. These racks also fold to take up less space. ALSO, you could build your own freestanding rack with either bricks or cinder blocks with a flat grill grate placed on top. Then you just set your stove right under it.
