How can I get the rear boxes to produce sound?

Assuming you are using Windows (works as of Oct. 2021): Go to the Sound Control Panel, Accessible through sound settings Right click on the device (something like Speakers, USB audio device) and select 'Configure Speakers' Follow the prompts to configure as desired. The 'drivers' on the disk are not needed, and are C-medias little sound applet. There is no reason I could find to install it.

I don't want to use this with my pc. I want to use the digital input from my tv and output to my pc speakers. Will that setup work?

I am not exactly sure what happens but as well as this unit works, certain software doesn't use it...Sonar X2, Reason 5 has a little issue but I didn't use it to record vocals, and I found it made a lot of "White Noise" in recording through the mic input...But the overall sound quality was great for output...It will definitely cancel out the onboard sound device...I am now seeking a Soundblaster Soundcard to mount to the mother-board, and simplify the process...Hope this helps and answers your question.

I use my laptop to play MP3/karaoke. I connect by headphone jack to a mixer. I get a impedance. Will this help? is this all I need? Anything else?

This might help a bit, but it really depends on your laptop and the quality of your mixer. I've had no problem with past connecting (low end) laptops directly to my Mackie mixer with 1/8" stereo out of laptop to dual 1/4" left & right into mixer. I use this sound card for hooking surround sound speakers in my office to my new laptop - sounds great for me. With that said, this is a very low-risk item to try at less than $17.UPDATE -- you might try hooking an mp3 player up instead of the laptop and see how that sounds. If it still sounds bad you might look at the cable you're using or the sound equipment playing the music
