FM, easily. AM is below this dongle's range so you'll need an upconverter or a dongle that can direct sample to get the 1MHz +-500KHz range.

no. the connection is USB on one end and SMA on the other end,

Yes, the primary difference between this model and the regular SMArt (in the black enclosure) is the tuner. The NESDR SMArt XTR, uses an E4000 tuner IC. The regular SMArt uses the R820T2 tuner IC. The two tuners have different frequency capabilities and require slightly different tuning procedures during operation.
