Could have wrapped up the series better
For the most part, I liked this book. It had action and a resolution to the Eldridge Colton disappearance.Reid Colton is a former detective who left that life due to questions about his partner's death. It's been 18 months and he carries guilt around like a shield. He's a rich man who found purpose as a police officer. Now he sleeps in and ends up walking around the Colton ranch mansion with nothing to do. His mother and her grief drive him nuts.Penelope Barrington Clark is his partner's widow. She holds onto the anger that Reid killed her husband. She's also the daughter of the Colton family attorney and has no relationship with him. They've always been distant. She comes across a hidden file of her husband's indicating he was investigating her father, but she can't tell for what. There's only one person she can ask: the man who worked side by side with her husband. Reluctantly, she calls Reid and he comes right over.Soon, they end up trying to put puzzle pieces together. What was Andrew (her husband) investigating? "Pen" agrees to work with Reid thinking it will clear her father's name. All their investigation does is bring danger and more questions than answers. She ends up in a secluded location with Reid and doesn't like what she's learning and thinking of her father and his activities. So many answers come to both of them. What her father has done to the Coltons, her husband, and her own history. She tries to ignore that she's been attracted to Reid since middle school. She married Andrew for a normal life. Reid being rich hits wrong buttons for her, and he calls her on it.While continuing their investigation of her father, Reid finds answers about his father's disappearance that's months old. To set up a sting for the family lawyer, Reid has to take his findings to his dysfunctional siblings to put a plan in motion. Fowler, hot head oldest brother, has a major role in this sting and eventually thinks he can take down the lawyer on his own. That creates yet another wrinkle in Reid's pursuit of Hugh Barrington. As Penelope finally learns all her father is, she also has to acknowledge her attraction to Reid. She wants stability and Reid is the playboy billionaire. Reid has to deal with how close he's become to her and her son while they've spent weeks in seclusion working together. Overall, their story was much different from the rest. They never had sex while together. Their attraction was there, but they didn't act on it, making it more believable. This book was the last in the series and had some holes. Most likely because each book was written by a different author and it looks like they didn't even talk about some things.1. Zane and Mirabella were married in their story; here they are referenced as engaged.2. Why Reid couldn't enlist the help of Allana's boyfriend Jake (a former Texas Ranger) and Piper's boyfriend Cord (a bounty hunter) is beyond me.3. Penelope is an unusual name and yet 2 books in a row the heroine's name is Penelope (Reid's sister Piper's real name is Penelope).4. An epilogue would have been good to answer a host of questions: What did Zane and Belle have? With his name clear, what did Reid's future hold? He could have worked with Piper's boyfriend in "Fugitive Recover," gone back to the force?5. Piper and Cord do not live at the mansion. She made it clear in their story she was going to stay with him and his sister at his house. There was no reason for Reid to hear them in her suite when walking by.I love reading series, but when you have multiple authors, they need to be sure to keep it consistent. I don't expect characters to be identically written when they become secondary characters, but readers do remember details. I felt so much was left hanging after investing so much time with all of their stories.

I enjoyed reading this final book in this series of the Texas Colton family saga. I would recommend it to anyone who has been reading this series. I can't wait for the next book in the Colton family series, which part of America will the Colton s family come from, so I can read it.

How far would you go to protect the ones you love. These Colton's are an eclectic mix but one thing that is evident. They fight for those they love and will go all out to keep them safe. Loving this series
