Just Plain Addictive
These books are like potato chips -- you can't stop at one! I have a lifelong interest in the early Middle Ages so this series is loads of fun for me, containing enough information for a high school course and packaged as an adventure story told by an engaging old Northumbrian man speaking of his long life during eventful times. My only complaint about the series is that the narrator, Uhtred Uhtredson, shows rather twenty-first century sensibilities that I would be skeptical of a tenth-century warlord holding. But of course that makes him a nice man and he's much easier to relate to than, say, T. H. White's cantankerous, misogynistic Merlin in The Once and Future King, a novel that takes place three or four centuries before this series. Read the first book of this series and see if you can stop at that.

A surprising series
I read mostly economics theory or business books. This was, unequivically, the most pleasantly surprising books I've ever read! My girls love the descriptive storytelling. I've recommended them to several of my friends.

Rich Historical Epic That Outshines Even Its Excellent TV Adaptation
Having watched The Last Kingdom series three times, I was captivated by how Cornwell's original work offers an even deeper dive into Uhtred's world. While the show excels in visualization, the books provide fascinating insights into Uhtred's complex mindset and ninth-century England's political landscape.Cornwell's detailed research shines through in the vivid descriptions of Saxon and Danish cultures, battle tactics, and daily life. His Uhtred is grittier and more morally ambiguous than the TV version, with internal monologues that reveal a sharp political mind behind the warrior facade. The novels excel at depicting the period's religious conflicts and power dynamics. Unlike the TV series' streamlined narrative, the books weave intricate political webs while maintaining thrilling pacing. The battle scenes are particularly impressive - visceral, tactical, and psychologically intense.I especially appreciate how Cornwell uses Uhtred's older self as narrator, adding layers of wisdom and hindsight to the young warrior's adventures. This narrative choice gives the books a depth that the TV series, despite its excellence, couldn't fully capture.Perfect for history buffs who enjoy complex characters and richly detailed historical fiction. The books and show complement each other beautifully, each offering unique perspectives on this fascinating period.

Great series
The story is compelling and hard to put down. I watched the TV show first and wanted more so I got the books. The books as usual are even better and have a lot that is not in the TV show. Similar story with the author's Sharpe series. The TV movies are great, but the books are better and have many more adventures.

Order Books 1-6 received 2 sets of books 4-6… Twice!!!
This book series is my all time favorite. Bernard Cornwell is my all time favorite author. I have always had to borrow the books thru the library so I was looking forward to having the first 6. Planned on rereading the series for the next release. However when I received my order the first time it was only 2 copies each of books 4-6. I requested a replacement set and returned what I received. Now the same thing happened again. This is incredibly frustrating and I don’t know if I want to try again. Makes be bummed because I was going to borrow the first book to my buddy cause I hyped the series so much for him.
