Johnny's last two albums for the Mercury label marked the singer's continued evolution towards the "cover" album format that was to serve him so well upon his return to Columbia, where he would sing the pop, stage and screen hits of the day instead of creating themed albums. For example, the centerpiece of So Nice (which hit #50 on the 1966 charts) was a three-song set from the then-current Broadway smash Man of La Mancha that Mathis had been performing live before the recording of the album; in fact, Johnny was among the first singers to cover songs from the musical. And Johnny Mathis Sings which reached #103 on the 1967 album charts-- took its material from such disparate sources as the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David ("Always Something There to Remind Me"), smash '60s films like Doctor Zhivago and High Time, the Broadway musical The Roar of the Greasepaint and the Beatles ("Eleanor Rigby"). Both albums make their CD debut here...Mathis expert Jim Ritz supplies the notes with fresh quotes from Johnny himself!

The last of Mercury albums and they are good ones!
I've long waited for these lp's to be reissued on CD. My records were pretty beat up. Bought them used long ago, but I had no choice. It was the only way to get Johnny's Mercury recordings. As usual for this reissue series, they are filled with new liner notes, reproductions of the original LP's and a nice new interview with Johnny himself! The only thing that I was disappointed with, from a collector's stand point, was that the last album he cut for Mercury doesn't have ANY information about the arrangers, conductors or even the recording dates. The dates all say unknown. I guess that's why over the years when a few of the Mercury titles did get released, they too did not have any discographical information. One can only assume that this information has been lost. Musically, they are satisfying with songs that Johnny is not known for singing. The first album So Nice, is based on the major bosa nova hit from Walter Wanderley and Johnny's version is nice and smooth. There are a trio of songs from the Man Of Lamancha and they are all outstanding, with Dulcinea being the stand out. The Music That Makes Me Dance is another highlight of the album. For Johnny Mathis Sings, despite the boring album title, the music is excellent. With a cut Bacharach song, Saturday Sunshine leading off the album, followed by what I think is the ONLY vocal version of the Breakfast At Tiffany's. Surely some rare material on this album. If you are a Johnny Mathis fan, this is self recommending. One may wonder about the remastering. Fear not for they sound excellent. Granted, the Mercury type of recording is VERY different from his days at Columbia. Mercury always favored that dry type of setting. Not nearly as reverberant as is Columbia recordings and at types, I feel that they could have more on the top end. But I'm nit picking. If you are familiar with the Mercury sound, you'll know what to expect. All in all, a reissue that's been a long time coming!

Wonderful,Wonderful!
Johnny Mathis is a true talent! His album So nice is just that! Easy listening and soothing. His phrasing is amazing! Johnny Mathis sings is such a joy to listen to. He does ballads like no other and he can swing softly with so much ease. I am so glad that I bought this package and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves beautiful singing and true talent!

Love Today's Technology
I am so glad these 60's LPs were finally remastered and released on the CD format. Great to hear those beautiful recordings again, along with other songs I had never heard (and now love), without the crackle and pop inherent in old LP records. Needless to say that Mr. Mathis shines again - as he well should. What a fantastic voice, and style!

Nicest "So Nice"
So Nice is an LP to CD by Johnny Mathis. Loved it in my youth, love it now. Favored song on it is "Hurry It's Lovely Up Here."Johnny has been the music of my life since late 1956. This is totally honest biased review. Mathis never disappoints.

The Most Romantic Voice Around
No one can compare to the romantic tones of Johnny Mathis. His voice still sounds as though he is 22.

" So Nice " CD is " So Nice !! "
I bought " So Nice " for my wife at Christmas, " So Nice " contains songs from " Man of La Mancha " including " Impossible Dream " , However the other CD " Johnny Mathis Sings " is poor quality remastering which is a great disapointment and the reason why I have awarded 3 stars only where it deserves FIVE .

Finale to Career at Global Records
These are the two remaining albums Johnny Mathis recorded for Global/Mercury records before making his triumphant return to Columbia in 1967, where he has remained to this day.'So Nice' - considering the wonderful selection of songs chosen for this LP, why was it given such a bland title?'The Impossible Dream' would have been a fitting tribute to this collection of favourite songs. Many, many singers have sung this arousing song from 'The Man of La Mancha' but not one of them approaches the Mathis version that has emotion in abundance; painful sincerity and concludes with a fabulous climax.I would give this CD a 5 star rating for this song alone, it is unbelievably good!'Sing' - another bland title for a collection of well known standard songs. Perhaps this offering should have been called 'Somewhere my Love' or even 'Who can I turn to?'.Perhaps Global Records realised that they were about to lose Mr Mathis to CBS and their enthusiasm was on the wane. Columbia however would, in a few years time, come to the rescue and re-issue these two albums and give them more appropriate titles; namely 'People' and 'The Impossible Dream'.The 24 tracks on this CD are indeed a fitting finale to JM's time with Global and represent a 'must buy' to all of his fans around the world.
