I have tried three different kinds of period underwear as an alternative to pads with the hopes of being more environmentally friendly. I have never used tampons, because I have a tilted uterus and find tampons uncomfortable, so my opinion on the comfort of period underwear comes from previously only using pads. When comparing pads vs. period underwear, the period underwear wins, no matter the brand, they are all more comfortable than pads. Of the three brands I have tried, these Goat Union ones are my favorite. The other two brands I have tried are Unders and Bambody. Below I'll rank the brands in order from best to worst in a few categories: Fit: Goat Union, Bambody, Unders. The Unders ones are the only ones I don't like the fit of, as they roll down and dig into my c-section scar. Goat Union are a really high waist (over the belly button), and Bambody are a little below the belly button. I like the higher waist and the cut on the leg holes best on the Goat Union. For reference, I'm a US size 12 and ordered a Large. Feel: Bambody, Goat Union, Unders. The Bambody are the softest and have the best stretch. All three stay about equally dry feeling on a heavy day. Price: Bambody, Goat Union, Unders. You get three pairs of Bambody for the price of one Unders, and slightly more than the price of two Goat Union. Absorption: Goat Union, then a tie between Bambody and Unders. All three can deal with a full night heavy flow for me, but the Goat Union have a much larger area with the absorbent layers. I love that the absorbing area goes all the way up high in the front and the back, rather than just in the lower gusset area like Bambody and Unders. Goat Union feel much less likely to leak overnight, though none of them have leaked on me yet. Smell: Unders, Goat Union, Bambody. This is honestly a big one, especially if you don't work from home. On heavy days the Bambody will start to smell after about 2 hours, and Goat Union after about 4-5, while the Unders can go 6-8 without smell. And it's just impractical to change underwear every 2 hours if you are at work or school. Aesthetic: Bambody, Goat Union, Unders. The Bambody are the best looking on my body, and they come in a few different colors which is nice, while Goat Union and Unders are only in black. The biggest thing that made Goat Union not rank first in this category though, was the weird mesh strip below the waist band. Not only does it just look kind of weird, but it also is like a weird peek-a-boo window for my stretch marks, and while I don't hate my stretch marks, I don't exactly like to highlight them either. Although Bambody technically won in more categories than Goat Union, I LIKE the Goat Union better, their biggest draw is that huge absorbing channel that goes all the way up to the mesh line in the front and back, it makes them feel so much more secure than the other two brands, at least for me. The smell absorption is another big one, it's the place where Bambody really fails wearers, and while Goat Union isn't as good as the Unders in that category, they still do a pretty good job.

You'll want to be wary of crop tops, even in your most high-waisted pants, but if you aren't worried about showing your midriff and more concerned about avoiding leakage, these are fantastic. Pros: - Significant capacity (two cycles of heavy flows and no leaks, so I ordered a second set to not have to do laundry every day) - Machine wash cold, tumble dry low - Odor reduction (much better than pads) Cons but not deal breakers (especially if you only use these overnight): - Seat isn't terribly wide at the bottom, could be more generous for such full-coverage briefs (Aerie's boybriefs actually cover your whole backside) - Thick binding on the edges, coupled with the above can cause visible panty lines even through jeans. - VERY high waist, the last inch of which is solely aesthetic (and could go IMO)
