Great device for testing the presence of voltage!
First, I will say that I really like Ideals products and have chosen them over other brands in this price range because of their long history and good reputation in the industry. This voltage tester has never let me down and is dual range so you can find active low voltage presence with it as well down to 12volts and up to 1000volts. People are complaining about it because you have to touch it to the wires and stick it in a socket for it to work. Personally, I do not have an issue with it working that way and the tip is clearly designed to stick in a socket. I have no issue having to touch the wire I am testing in my line of work since I am looking to find the hot wires which can be colored different depending on who installed it. I like it and will keep using it.

Double check with a voltmeter. Failed to detect voltage.
Failed on two occasions to detect voltage when I knew there was voltage present, this is pretty much useless. Luckily use a voltmeter to properly check before taking any actions.

does not detect voltage unless it is touching wire or contact!
With the unit set on the low voltage setting, it would not alarm when very close to a 120Vac outlet and then it finally alarmed when the tip was stuck into the actual outlet. I purchased this for troubleshooting Christmas lights but unless you are physically touching the conductor or wire it will NOT indicate. This is garbage and does not perform as stated. Returned for refund!!!

DOESN'T DETECT 12 VOLT CURRENT
This tester was used to detect current in low voltage landscape applications. It worked on 24 volt irrigation circuits and 120 volt household current. However, It would not detect 12 volt current when when applied directly to the metal conductor on a live current carrying wire.
