WE Games Supersize Checkbook Magnetic Chess Set, 10 inches

I would have given this a five star rating, except it was smudged all over when I received it. I had to scrub it to get the marks off. I almost sent it back.It is very portable, the magnets nice and strong. It is nice to have when going over a chess book and the dog doesn’t knock it over with its tail.

Having been through a few of the checkbook size sets, my expectations were not high. This larger set was to make it easier to handle and see the pieces. This set does that well. The pieces are large enough and clearly printed so a quick look is enough to see the board accurately. Manufacturing quality is pretty good. The mid board seam is very slightly off center, but not enough to distract. Mechanically it is solid. The magnet strength is surprisingly good for sheet magnets. Unlike some sets of this type, these pieces are not going to be dislodged or shifted in normal handling. They will stay where you put them, and can be deliberately moved easily. For the price and purpose it is perfect.

I love these checkbook style travel sets! They're light weight, fit easily in a backpack, the magnetic pieces look nice and allow you to play on non-level surfaces. I highly recommend.

This is a great set for when you’ll be out of your element. The magnets are very strong. This is good to keep hold of pieces, but slows down analysis. Wont replace a Staunton set or analysis set, but works in a pinch. Great features, such as extra blank pieces if you lose one. Wont function for hiding your games, as I recall studying chess with an actual checkbook sized set during physics in high school, but more useful overall than smaller sets.

The designers left off a necessary feature of this chess set. That it should be magnetically closable so that it stays closed until you open it up. I solved the problem by taking a couple of pieces of the spent sheet that the pieces were mounted in and attached it by peeling the white coating off and then taking that adhesive coated magnetic strip cleaning the surface of the wallet with alcohol and pressing it on to each side that I was trying to make magnetically sealed and now it is magnetically lockable when you're not using it. I feel that Improvement made this the ultimate portable set that takes up very little room and slipping it in with chess books because of how flat it is makes it more flexible as a carry everywhere chess set.
