Cicadas Serenade

The poetry is haunted with a darkness I do not always comprehend within the context of any given poem. It's somewhat Edgar Allen Poe-like at times, and, at other times, mystifying or overwhelmingly overshadowed by a negative force that maintains its grip on the collection. Some readers might find that more compelling than I did.I choose to be generous, to give this book four stars, because I sense much potential here and I wish only to encourage its creator forward. There are a number of good poems, if a reader can move past the darkest ones, especially those where the poet does not get too overtaken by intricate and improbably phrasings, which can distract more than they might mean something.Subjectively speaking, I did find some lines defied being reading aloud or being comprehended, so this is something potentially to watch for, I would say. One poem focuses on the fear of saying something so clearly that no one says anything. I'd hope that is a narrator speaking and not an actual authorial worry expressed over becoming understandable.In my many experiences as a poetry reader, there are a plethora of styles and techniques through which a writer can still be understandable as well as literary-sounding and intellectually provocative without sacrificing anything or resorting to words and wording few people might have the patience to unravel.

I have been reading this book whenever I have some time to spare and it is now one of my favorite poetry books. It is full of personality, it has a character. Worth the read.

Reading just one poem by Antonio Eramo will either leave you feeling challenged, delighted or intimidated because the man simply takes no prisoners in his verses.Classically trained in the structure and flow of the art he expects the reader to be on a similar level. His creations include, among other things, alliteration, double entendres, etymology, slyly dry humor, rephrasing of old adages for new purposes, acrostics, various poetic forms and puns just to name a few tools of his trade.The reader should reasonably expect that, with the intent to fully follow and understand any one poem, it may be an instantaneous revelation or quite possibly a lengthy analysis. But in any case you will have found yourself within the pith of poetry’s soul.

Each word is impactful and purposeful; none have a place without a reason. Eramo's poetry gives hope to modern poets that classic poetry is good poetry. If you are looking for Instagram poetry and subtext on a motivational poster, this isn't the collection for you. If you want poems that make you question your train of thought and dig deeper than the surface of satire, buy this book now. This won't be a book you regret having on your bookshelf.

I had a dream about cicadas that led me to finding this book of poetry the next morning. Creeped me out but was worth the experience. Now I wait for Antonio to pour into his next book. Writers I like are hard to find.

His use of poetic device, such as close association to create internal rhyme renews my faith in form, which distinguishes poetry from prose.
