Easy to set up with a decent app
This is the second WiiM mini I've bought in order to add multi room playback from my NAS.Why should you buy a WiiM?Easy to set up? Check.Solid WiFi connection? As long as your router is decent, check.Simple but well featured app that's Android and IOS compatible? Check. All main music streaming platforms (Spotify/Tidal/Qobuz/Deezer/Amazon) supported? Check.Internet radio service? Check.Stream from locally stored music on NAS device? Check.Continuous updates of both firmware and app, with a community forum for reporting of bugs, developer feedback and suggestions for future updates and additional features? Check. It's not quite the perfect device, there's no LAN connection (you'll need the WiiM Pro for that) and WiFi is your only option aside from the inferior quality offered by Bluetooth, there's currently no Roon support if that matters to you, there's no USB input or output and there's no included power supply, so you'll need a 5v (minimum 1 amp) PSU with a USB C connection such as a phone charger capable of fast charge.Personally I'd spend a bit more on a dedicated PSU with half decent regulation, but a modern phone charger will work. The best way to use a WiiM is to make use of the optical output into any good DAC of your choice because it's trump card (no, not the orange fella with tiny hands!) is BIT PERFECT DIGITAL OUTPUT, which means you can stream HD audio with no loss of quality into a far superior setup for the price of an £80 plastic puck.No need for silly money streamers with buggy, frustrating interfaces, just to get a decent sounding DAC.I have tried the internal DAC and it performs well enough for the price. It has the distinct Burr Brown colouration to the sound, with a bit of a tilt towards the mid/bass and a touch lacking sparkle and depth of soundstage. But get real, it's £80.iFi charge £180 for their highly overrated Zen DAC v2 (trust me, I bought one) and it's pretty similar in presentation.Another point to bring up is that Linkplay claim to respect your privacy and the app only sends crash reports.Seriously, read what data some of the other "HiFi" companies collect and you'd think they were Facebook, not audio equipment designers. Now please Linkplay, go away and design a new version of the WiiM Pro (MkII? Pro+?) with two USB ports for connecting local storage such as HDD or flash drives and wider DAC connectivity.Oh and make 'em actually available here in the UK because the tiny quantity of existing Pro models disappeared in a flash.

Amazing mini-streamer with plenty of features and great sound
I bought this little streamer in order to add Tidal Connect to my stereo setup (Cambridge Audio Minx Xi and Q Acoustics Concept 20) in my conservatory. I was considering replacing my amplifier with a Bluesound Powernode to get the same functionality but saw the WiiM Mini on the Tidal support site and thought I would give it a go. I am really glad I did as it does everything I need and saved me nearly £750 to boot!It is simple to set up, although the app does take a little getting used to. It also comes with all the connector cables you need - I didn't realise this and bought a Toslink cable as well, which is now going spare. You will need a USB power adapter as a suitable cable is included but not the mains plug itself. I have a USB outlet on the extension lead I use so that was simple enough!Sound quality is very good, more than good enough for where it is being used and good enough for a main system, although true audiophiles may want something a little more detailed in the midrange. I used to use Tidal HiFi over Bluetooth to my amp, but it sounded a bit thin in bass and midrange when compared to Spotify, even though the data rate was much higher. The WiiM Mini has totally changed that and the higher quality of the Tidal CD quality tracks is really noticeable when compared to the current Spotify Connect service. Tidal MQA Master quality is due to be available after the firmware update in May so that is going to be a quantum leap in terms of sound quality; I can't wait!!Internet radio is also clearer through the WiiM Mini than the tuner in my amp, although the difference isn't as marked as with Tidal/Spotify. The app allows you to set up to 6 stations as presets, but I am still working my way through all the options and using the Internet radio function in my amp for the time being.I would thoroughly recommend the WiiM Mini to anyone looking to add music streaming to their existing system. It will not be embarrassed in the presence of kit costing a few thousand pounds, which is amazing for something costing less than £100.
