Dave's Renal Support Food: Too Dry and Not Very Appealing
I picked up this food because my cat has CKD and I was hoping to avoid the higher cost of prescription renal diets. Unfortunately, she took a couple of bites from the first can and then refused to eat any more, which was surprising as she's definitely not a picky eater. I tried offering it to my other cats, but none of them were interested either, a single sniff then they walked away. One of the biggest drawbacks is that the product is not returnable, and it only comes in full cases. It really would help if they offered smaller packs or sample sizes, especially for cats with kidney issues who are often picky eaters. Having to buy an entire case just to find out your cat won’t eat it is pretty frustrating. The food itself is noticeably drier than most canned wet foods. In my case, that probably contributed to the refusal. On the upside, unlike a few other reviewers mentioned, all of my cans arrived in good condition with no defects. I didn’t want the whole case to go to waste, so I experimented a bit. Mixing one can with a pouch of Purina Pro Plan Hydra Care made it palatable enough that my CKD cat would eat it. It’s not ideal, but it was the only way to get her to accept it at all. Overall, this might work for some cats, and I'm glad another company is making renal diets, but mine was not a fan, and the lack of smaller trial options makes it a risky purchase.

would buy again
Our cat loved the food! It was nice to know there was quality food for her without a prescription. If I ever have another cat with kidney issues, I would purchase this food again.

Poor Texture and Little Moisture
This product has the ingredients necessary to address renal issues but not texture and moisture. It is very flakey and seems dry. My cat has difficulty consuming it so it won't be on the menu in the futre. And, since I am not a cat, I cannot speak for the taste but my cat tried to eat some of it.

My cat will not eat this food.
Too dry. The label says "Pate in Juice" but there is no juice. It is the consistency of dough and my cats will not touch it. I should have read the other reviews and saved the money.

Helped my cat with his crystals
One of my cats was recently diagnosed with urinary crystals. Since phosphorus is one of the main contributing factors, I did some research and switched them over from Wellness brand wet food to Dave's. I also took them off dry food completely. They didn't love it at first, so I mixed in some Wellness Morsels Healthy indulgence packets (also low in phosphorus) to add some flavor. After a week or two I got my cat checked out by the vet and the crystals were down significantly. I waited another month and got him checked again and his levels were completely normal. This is not a prescription food, but it worked for my cat. It's not cheap, but if it helps I think it's worth it.

It has a texture like the clay you would use to throw a pot on a wheel.
... BEFORE you add the water to make it workable. It may well do the job it advertises, I don't know. But it is the most unpleasant food experience I've ever had to deal with. Every time this comes up in my cat's rotation it sets my cat and I at loggerheads. He isn't a picky cat. I've just never tolerated a picky cat. My cats have always been fed food that I deem healthful and nutritious. Until this food I've never had a cat defecate on the food. I've never had a cat give me a Puma scream when he sees me reaching for it. I've never had a cat go outside, catch a squirrel, bring it in and fling it in my face, yowling, "THAT'S proper food, Hussy!" I'm stubborn and creative. That's how I've managed to get through 6 cans of this case. That's how I'll manage to get through the rest of it... eventually. But I'll never buy it again. I'll keep looking for a low magnesium, low phosphorus can. But my boy is quite clearly telling me one of us will die before he has to eat this for the rest of his life. I'm not convinced that I won't be the one unalived.

Not perfect, but pretty great
My cat has kidney disease and I've been buying prescription food for years when he suddenly decided he no longer wanted to eat it. It's always irritated me that I have to get permission from a vet to buy food for my cat, so I went searching everywhere for a non-prescription renal cat food. The pickin's are slim and with a cat that 's very particular about textures, it's even harder. This food is actually pretty great. Of all of the renal health foods I tried, this is one of the only foods that my cat actually ate. It's a pate, which my cat prefers, but it's very firm and thick. If I tried to put a portion of this in his bowl without any modifications, he'd have a difficult time eating it. I either had to spoon tiny chunks of it out and hand feed him one bite at a time (which he really enjoyed, lol, but I don't have time for that every day) or simply mix some water into it and mix it up to his preferred consistency. It's a little pricey, but so are all prescription foods, so take your pick, prescription or non-prescription. I haven't been feeding this to my cat long enough to tell if it will affect his lab work, but he seems to be doing well on it so far. Overall I'd recommend it. The only thing I wish is that they had options in smaller cans as well.

Too low in protein for cats
On a site that reviewed the phosphorus and protein content of cat food, I read that this food is too low in protein for cats. My cats would not eat it and the company refused to accept a return. I wasted all that money on a product I could not use. I will never by from this company again.
