War and Peace Louise and Aylmer Maude Paperback – March 30, 2020

I wanted a good translation for my 3rd reading of War and Peace. This translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude seemed one of the best according to my research. It is not the most updated of the Maude versions, but the price was right.This edition is not marred by typographical errors as some inexpensive editions are. I only found one typo in the entire text.My only criticism concerns the standard practice in direct quotation to change paragraphs when the speaker changes. This edition is confusing because it does not follow that rule. I don't know if that is the Maude's error or the Kindle edition's editors. It took me a while to get used to figure out who was saying what when personal pronouns were the only way to identify speakers.Other than that it was a great way to read War and Peace - a translation that flows, uses modern terms, and is very reasonable price.

It was very good. I enjoyed it.

I'm no expert, but I believe it when people claim it to be one of the most profound, beautiful, exciting and moving novels ever written. This book changed my understanding of my life, our history and the human condition. I compared a couple of translations and personally found this one to be the most readable. I read that other versions are more scholarly and suited to the those studying Tolstoy.

Classic Russian literature....plodding and filled with descriptive exposition.
