A piece of cardboard would have worked as well

I was skeptical, but willing to give it a try after a tortuous night on the sofa bed. It is pricey, but has made a tremendous difference in the comfort level. I can't even feel the bar. This pad is a miracle.

If you don't want to feel the bar on a sofa bed, cover it with foam tubular pipe insulation. Buy a twin size memory foam at Walmart and cut it in a couple of pieces and stick it between the mattress & metal bar. Sleep comfortably. 😴
