3.8-Inch version is easy to grasp and has the surprising magnification of a 5-inch dome. I bought a second one for the office after having one at home for six weeks. This is not just a dome shape. It is actually a 3.8 inch dome on top of a 3.8 inch disk; but it is all made in one contiguous solid piece (not two pieces). The flat vertical section around the sides is what I am calling the disc portion below the dome. It provides two advantages over a dome-only model. First, it makes it much easier to grasp and pick up than the kind that are only a dome because your fingers will tend to slip over a dome-only shape; and second, having the disk below the dome has the effect of raising the 3.8 inch dome portion up above the reading surface higher than it would otherwise be. And this increases the magnification to what it would be with a 5-inch dome while still being in a comfortable 3.8-inch diameter. Finally, the material is not glass but don't let that scare you. It is a high-quality heavy-duty acrylic which also means that it is lighter and easier to pick up than a glass dome of comparable size. It is still substantially dense material, perfectly clear, and will not scratch or scuff. Don't skimp. If you want the big one then get the big one. I paid $26 each for two of the 3.8 inch models and I expect to get 30 years of use out of these.

This item is not a paper weight. Althoùgh you could use it as one when not using it as it was intended for. It is a acylic dome shaped manifing glass. You set it directly on the page, sketch or building plans and slide it about. The dome shape captures the light within the room and directs it down to what the dome is sitting upon. It keeps the images in perfect shape quality. Perfect for reading architectual plams that have been reduced to half or qtr. size. My place of employment after viewing thru this dome ordered some 10 of them so all the engineers, plan readers, or graphic designers didn't have to strugle with viewing small details.This magnifier beats out the old fashioned glass on a handle by leaps and bounds!!!

The magnifer is very nice and works well. I subtracted a star because they shipped this heavy object in a plastic bag in a box that wasn't sealed. The magnifier survived, but the product box was destroyed in shipping. I'm glad this wasn't a gift.I understand that shipping something in a bag rather than a box might be cheaper, but if the entire product doesn't arrive intact, what is the point?
