"NICE BOOK FOR THE $$$"
I love butterflies, as much as I love cutting out snowfakes & coloring. Not being able to find my favorite coloring books "Red farm studios " I decided to try a few of these. I am really happy I did.The illustrations in these Dover coloring books meet my expectations. There are 45 different pages of these beautiful butterflies to choose from. The pages are double sided so paints or permanent markers will ruin the flip side. Also on the bottom of the picture to be colored, there are little factoids about the butterfly your bringing to life.On both inner front & back covers of this book are the photos of the pages in this book already colored , giving you the idea of how these fluttering beauty's should look. This coloring book does not have perforated pages, so care is to be taken when tearing them or cutying them out.4 out of 5 stars from me because the factoids should be on separate pages in the back of this book & these pages are double sided limiting you to crayons or pencils. That's what I use crayola's twistable colored pencils, 30 per pack. You are not able to sharpen them but they are retractable.THANKS FOR READING, BYE.😄

Great Book for Target Audiences -- Does have its Limitations
A few comments regarding the book itself, which may deter some people from purchasing it: The paper is fairly thin and printed on both sides. The binding isn't designed to remove any pages, because they are folded 11x17" paper, held together with three staples. For my purposes, I know I won't want to tear out any completed pictures, so that isn't a problem for me; but I know many people do enjoy displaying their finished projects -- in those situations, this could become a little complicated. The pages could certainly be cut out with an X-Acto knife, as long as you're prepared for the 'other' half of that sheet to be loose in the book afterwards. The coloring itself isn't difficult; and it does come with finished thumbnail illustrations on the inner covers, showing the correct coloration patterns for each species pictured in the book, for anyone who would like to match the coloring up with that rather than being more imaginative. In this regard, it is a nice book for older children, particularly those interested in the life sciences. I love butterflies, and consequently I love this book; but it may not be 'right' for everyone.

Poorly Rendered Details OK Coloring Book
Ok, this is a coloring book, but it's described as being very accurate and "detailed".From the back cover: "This treasure of detailed, accurately rendered illustrations" had my expectations up.I found the illustrations/outlines to be of average to low quality, with very little attention to detail. Seems like the coloring pages were illustrated in a rush. The write-ups about each species are "ok" but we're here for the butterfly renderings for coloring. One of the many beautiful aspects of butterflies is the symmetry of their wings and patterns.Example: Page 5 is a Tiger Swallowtail - the wings don't even match. The patterns are different, the bottom of the wings are very different in how dots and "tiger-stripes" are rendered. Veins in the wings are also not-matching each other.Page 40 - Ruddy Daggerwing - more of the same, stripes are asymmetrical and rendered very casually with one stripe appearing on the right wing that isn't even present on the left at all.I am amazed at how primitive the illustrations are. When a 3 - year old can point out differences in wing details, the illustrations should be re-visited.It's an inexpensive coloring book and works as a pass-time for little ones. But if you want accuracy and mirrored-wing layouts, this isn't something I would recommend.

IT ALSO PROVIDES SOME INFORMATION ALONG WITH IT.THIS ALL MAKES IT NOT ONLY A VERY BEAUTIFUL COLORING BOOK BUT ALSO A VERY INTERESTING ONE TOO!!!THE BUTTERFLIES ARE VERY LARGE ON THE PAGE WITH THE FLOWER OR PLANT BEHIND THEM IN THE BACKGROUND.ONCE YOU HAVE COLORED SOME OF THESE, YOU WILL DEFINITELY WANT TO FRAME SOME OF THEM!!!BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOURSELF OR AS A GIFT!!!YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED AT ALL.

Beauty and for All to Enjoy
First I will say that this company has some of the best Artists around. As an Artist, I spot good talent fast. They have such a huge selection of books. I have bought many for my Grandchildren and myself LOL. Drawing always relaxes me, when life is getting too much. The quality of their paper is fabulous for crayons, pencils and watercolors. The Dover Publishers are the nicest people to deal with. If you have a problem, want to ask about more books, or just chat about Art, they are very warm and inviting people. If you love to draw, or want to teach a child, this is the book for you. Out of so many coloring books, this is my favorite one. Enjoy it!

Absolutely beautiful.
Can't wait to give it to my granddaughters. The butterflies on the leaves they like are stunning, with photos inside the book cover of their true colors, Hope they can keep it in their libraries so they can have it as a reference when they see one outside and wonder what kind it is.

Lovely book I use for art/design reference.
Love Dover books. This one doesn't disappoint. I've been collecting these for my art/design reference library since mid-1960s. I don't use it as a coloring book. I traced over my fave, onto watercolor paper on a light table, for reference. Then I'll draw onto other paper to create my own compositions. Won't look like the originals, but at least I will get proportions more accurately than if I drew freehand. I just need for inspiration and reference. Then watercolor, watercolor pencils, colored pencils or pastels.I simply cannot color on thin paper, which is the standard no matter the publisher.
