Q: How HIGH is it? The specs list the "assembled height" as 12"; then further down it lists a "14-1/2" overall height". Which is it?

The full extended height is 14- 1/2 inches. It adjusts to the 12 inch height by loosening the hinge lock to lower it.

Q: Does this piano lamp have a felt bottom to protect the finish on the piano?

Yes it does! Just checked mine.

Q: Is this lamp completely metal?...or are there plastic parts to it?

when examining the external parts of the lamp that are visible, it is all metal except 3 areas: 1) bottom smooth felt so as not to damage surface, 2) plastic bulb socket inside hood, 3) there is a plastic standoff (about 1/2 inch square) between the curve rods and the horizontal bulb area. There are 2 adjustable areas with metal knobs ,etc 1) can be seen in the picture and 2) is not visible in the picture. The 2nd one is near the bulb hood (this is where the plastic part is). THe plastic part, if it breaks, could easily be replaced with something from the hardware store that can be metal.

Q: Does this lamp get hot to the touch? I have small kids who like to play the piano and our current lamp is too hot to be safe.

an led bulb would not get hot and would be safe to use (rather than the cfls). am not sure of the type of bulb but will look into it.
