Pulls no punches.
The tone is incredibly consistent throughout. You quickly get a sense of how gritty and unforgiving the setting is. The world building is brilliant. The main characters are very likeable and I quickly came to care about them. I found the array of antagonists to be genuinely intimidating due to how component they were and how fleshed out their motivations turned out to be. They complimented the main character of Ryan very nicely. I particularly liked how flawed Ryan is. All of this comes together to paint a very vivid picture of the setting and I can't wait to see were Daniel takes the series from here.

Cracking good read
Brilliant book, thoroughly enjoyed it, great characters and probably a bit scarier because of the times we are living in. Looking forward to more of Daniels work.

Not what i expected!
Brilliant read, highly recommend!More detailed review below, which MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS:This book was a real surprise! When i knew it was post apocolypitic, i instantly assumed it would be zombies/aliens/creatures of some kind we had to fight or fear, i didnt for a second expect it to be what it was. And i LOVED what it was and it genuinely scared me, as it felt very realistic and VERY likely in our near future. I really enjoyed how the story wasnt handed to me on a plate and certain details were hinted at, but not revealed until later. LOVED the gory scenes (*cough* saw & mallet *cough*). Very keen to learn more about the world they are in.My only feedback would be, that the ending felt very positive and neat/tidy, which made me wonder how this will lead onto a sequel, but i have no doubts the next challenge is just around the corner for our group.Overall, i really enjoyed the book, loved the references to the local area, loved the world you had created and genuinely felt distrurbed by it. Brilliant first novel!

WOW!
I loved this Story! It was original and the author did not shy away from a difficult, yet realistic storyline.Set in post apocalyptic England and following Ryan and his makeshift family trying to survive and create a new way of life for themselves. The descriptions made me feel like I was part of the story and really had me rooting for and championing them. From the language, to the violence, to the characters, both good and bad, the Author did not hold back making this a truly unputdownable, thrilling and slightly scary read.

Humans are scary!
Move aside The Walking Dead and all those zombies - humans are way scarier! The Taste Beneath is a superb post apocalyptic story of survival, pitching Ryan's community of found family, based in an old vineyard, against a ruthless eternal threat. The world building is FABULOUS (I love all the little survival details), tensions believable, and a cast of characters that face the ultimate question - how far do you go to ensure the survival of those you love?
